SMTP setup in configuration seems to use PHP-Mail

I put my SMTP details in but when sending a test email it gives a confusing message. Why would Joomla use PHP-Mail?

What is the "confusing message"....I don't understand your question - your screenshot shows joomla using SMTP.

The test email should basically say "this is a test email......"

What else did you expect it to say?

Did the mailbox specified in the field From Email receive the test message? Had the connection to the SMTP server succeeded, the email would probably have been added to the Sent folder of that mailbox.

Joomla obviously uses PHP Mail as a fallback if the connection to the SMTP server has not been established.

It is possible that your host does not allow the web server to connect directly to SMTP servers outside the host network. PHP Mail most likely uses the outgoing SMTP server in the host network.

Thank you for the hint "that your host does not allow the web server to connect directly to SMTP", I will investigate that.
