Bots downloading material

Post by SimplexTimePlan » Tue Dec 04, 2012 1:03 pm

Hello.

Yesterday I switched to another download component which had the possibility to e-mail me, if someone downloaded a file.

So when I checked my inbox this morning, I've received 100 e-mails, telling me that two different ip addresses have downloaded material from my website from 5.19 pm to 7.28 pm.
Later I received yet another 100 e-mails with four other different ip addresses downloading the exact same material, from 10.58 am to 11.20 am.

Too odd behaviour to be ordinary people, so I figure it is bots.

Is there anyway to combat this? Of course Captcha is one way, but the component I use doesn't offer this service (Phoca Download). Can I combine this component with a Captcha plugin?

The site is running Joomla 1.5.24 stable version.

Hi SimplexTimePlan,

According to Jan (who has 26,471 posts at phoca.cz):

http://www.phoca.cz/forum/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20073
Hi, Phoca Download does not have any feature to allow downloading all files at once. If some bot visits your site and goes to every link (inlcude download links) then maybe you should do some "whole site" protection, e.g. ban this bot from displaying your site, etc.
If you check out that post, the user was reporting the same issue as yourself.
Please let me know if I can help any further.
Thanks, BradM, with http://www.inmotionhosting.com Support
