/administrator/index.php showing basic HTML

Hi All

With one of my sites, the "administrator/index.php" just shows a basic HTML type page (see attached)
I have tried different browsers, cleared cache, etc but nothing seems to work.
Latest Joomla version, all extensions are up to date.

Any ideas?

Hey OldGoat,

The problem is that your CSS file is not loaded for this specific page.
The issue there could be caused by the fact that you have updated the Joomla recently. Try to open up Inspector - it should show you some CSS missing error and after that you could try to pinpoint what causes it.

Sounds like the CSS for your Isis template is not loading (or the CSS is corrupted). Perhaps a third-party extension is interfering with the way that the Isis template's index.php is being processed? Might be an idea to see the Forum Post Assistant report.

The site is only a few months old and I never had any issues. Also only updated from 3.8.1 to 3.8.3 just now without issues.
Unfortunately I am not that technical but the site resides on a managed server. I would not know what CRON jobs are

If you only recently updated from J! 3.8.1 then it begs the question as to how the site came into existence. The database collation type is latin_swedish_ci (character encoding latin1) which is "wrong" for J! 3.8.1: the standard, from J! 3.5.0 onward, is the collation type to be utf8mb4_unicode_ci (character encoding utf8mb4). Therefore, I don't know how you created your J! 3.8.1 website like this in the first place.

Maybe you didn't start by installing J! 3.8.1 cleanly? Maybe you used one of those "quick install" methods? The next question is, [beginning with a bad start] how did you update from J! 3.8.1 to J! 3.8.3?

Possible database corruption, maybe? Possible webhosting environment problems, maybe? I don't know the answers to any of the questions I'm asking. There's really only one expert in the room at the moment and it's not me.

Just to clarify...
The FPA reports the database default collation and character set.
The tables collation could very well be utf8mb4_unicode_ci.
The screen form part of the FPA list the tables with their collation.

Site has been going since October 2017.
I installed via cpanel using Softaculous Apps Installer.
Update was done via the Joomla update function
If I change admin template, the problem still exists.

I guess I can/will live with it for now

That's what caused the problem in the first place! The installation package created by your webhosting provider, written in Softaculous, was a fudged/kludged/thrown-together mess of code that didn't install Joomla correctly. The lesson to be learned is that websites installed by Softaculous, Fantastico, Installatron, &c. cause more problems than they're worth. Yes, you can have a website installed in about 10 minutes with these things; you can also install Joomla using the standard installation kit in the same amount of time.

Anyway, we can't help you with this problem or any future problems you may have with your website. As you say, you've decided to live with it, so there's nothing more that can be done. All the best. Cheers.
