Issue with creating custom field at contacts/categories

Hi all,

actually I got an issue with a J3.8.2 Site: I want to create a custom field at contacts, as soon I hit the button "new" I got the message "An error has occured "0 Call to a member function hasChildren() on null""

there is no further information - only the button to go back to control panel.

Would be glad if anyone could help me with this.

I think you have corrupt files. Download https://downloads.joomla.org/cms/joomla ... ackage.zip (do not extract) and open Joomla update component, tab 'upload and update'. Select the zip and upload and install after you have entered your credentials. This will refresh all files and folders and might resolve your issue

@Leo: the update takes me to another error: Error on updating manifest cache: extensions not installed
(tbh: I didn't install the entire site, there are a few core things missing, and I try to get it on step by step again)

@effrit: your suggestion helped me. for some reasons the root entry was missing and I was able to create new fields

so for now I need to check what went wrong with that site.

1. Make a backup
2. Components >>> Joomla update >>> check for updates ... reinstall Joomla core files.
3. Extensions >>> Manage >>> Discover ... Discover ... install anything it finds
4. Extensions >>> Manage >>> Update >>> Find updates ... update anything that shows
   (Also check for updates on the home sites of all your 3rd party extensions)
5. Extensions >>> Manage >>> Database ... fix anything that needs fixing
6. Extensions >>> Manage >>> Warnings

A little history of your site would be useful
How did you install Joomla initially ?
What version was it originally ?
Have you had any failed updates ? If yes then how did you fix them ?

ok first a little bit of history: I started working on that site about 2 - 3 month ago, everything was installed already assuming because of the "mod_default" that the site exists already before J2.0 (not 100% sure) also not sure who did updates on this site before. Actual I can't start with a complete fresh install, due to the amount of users (....)

with your help I managed to get rid with the manifest error, but still have some problems with custom fields:
I am able to set Field Groups, Access, Language, Notes but I don't have the possibility to advise a category to the field.

https://extensions.joomla.org/extension/j2xml/ You can use Akeeba to transfer the site to localhost and try that extension.

There is a limit to how many you can export/import at a time but you can do it in stages. There is a paid 3rd party extension that does the same thing but moves more at a time.

So this is solved by you rebuilding the site on localhost ?
