500 Internal Error for no reason

I do not know how to code a site for Joomla. I am simply administering this for a customer of ours.

Site worked fine until yesterday afternoon. Then it gave a 500 internal error. Hosted by GoDaddy, they said it is a coding error. They said it was the index file at fault. That file hasn't been edited since Dec. 2016.

I tried restoring the site to an earlier data and it does the same thing.

I cannot find any error logs. I am pretty much lost. Anyone with any idea, help would be greatly appreciated.

Two points:

1) If the "index file" hasn't been changed since December 2016 then the website software is probably outdated and the hasn't been properly maintained. It's possible that the hosting provider has changed something that has caused the website to capsize. My guess would be to inventory the site and see what part(s) of Joomla is/are incompatible with the platform you're working with. As a side-note, GoDaddy is notorious for placing the blame for website problems back on the shoulders of their customers.

2) Enable Joomla debug mode in the Global Configuration settings and set the Error Level to "Maximum" (there are instructions in the documentation section that will assist you) and, if this displays more information about the HTTP 500 Internal Server Error, then please post that information here.

Also you should inform your customer that their website is probably using an outdated version of J! (with outdated extensions) and that they may benefit from having the software updated.

It takes about 2 minutes to enable Joomla debug mode. If you want to wait until tomorrow morning, that's your choice.

My Joomla game is mega weak. I do not see any error logs. Nothing in the GoDaddy Cpanel. I was able to activate the debugger and change it to maximum in the Joomla Administrator login. But that is as far as I can get. I downloaded PHP Storm, that's like reading ancient Aramaic to me. The site is Joomla 5.6. I cannot update to 5.8, keep getting a page that comes up and says, you guessed it, 500 error.

PHP - Storm - I'm not sitting on my hands waiting for the pro's to save this person's site. I'm proactively trying to figure out the problem. PHP Storm was recommended in another forum somewhere for being able to debug the issue, but I have no idea how to use it.

Joomla 5.6 - Obviously I'm not serious, clearly Joomla is 3.X.

It appears to be caused by a bodged update. Restore using your latest good backup.

If you get error 500 and there is not errors then you can:
- enable error reporting in joomla global configuration;
- or somewhere in joomla code, search for `error_reporting(0);` which hides all errors and comment it;
- search for function that is suppressed by `@` and generates PHP Fatal Error, for example `@mysqli_query($query);`;
- the simple way can be to increase the php memory

Did you remove all the old files before restoring the backup?
Have you tested the backup on localhost ?
Please run the fpa now that you have restored the backup.

After doing the restore, I cannot even get into the Joomla Administrator Login, that is now giving a 500 error.

"More than one instance of version.php found!" ... suggests that you did not remove the old files before restoring your backup.

You need to create a new database and import the backed up sql flie (that matches your backup files)
DELETE the files from the server
Upload the backed up files
Then edit the configuration.php to connect to the database.

Ok. Well I do not know how to do any of that. I have no experience in messing with anything behind the scenes. My experience with this site has been to log into the admin portion, upload new documents/pictures/etc and make them display in the appropriate area of the web site.

I get the gist of what your saying, and I know it can;t be hard to figure out the downloading and deleting and such. But creating new databases, making sure things match, I wouldn't know where to begin.

Public Host was correct, But password and user were gibberish. I don't know if that was from errors or just security encryption.
