Update 3.8.x to 3.9.13 results in error

Post by gossamerLL » Sun Dec 01, 2019 7:56 pm

I recently took over a joomla site that was out of date (3.8.x) and updated it to the current version 3.9.13. I do have a backup that I can go back to but was hoping maybe there is another way to fix this error than doing that.

The error shows up when trying to save articles.
Save failed with the following error: Unknown column 'note' in 'field list'

I've searched on this error and for some people doing a database fix takes care of the issue. This did not work for me.

It says the database is up to date and shows this:

Database schema version (in #__schemas): 3.9.10-2019-07-09.
Update version (in #__extensions): 3.9.13.
Database driver: mysqli.
173 database changes were checked.
213 database changes did not alter table structure and were skipped.

Any help would be appreciated.
Linda

Hello Linda

Have you tried the Fix Database tool?
( click on: Extensions -> Manage -> Database )

Just supposing you restored the website [back to J! 3.8.something], do you know if the error was there before?

Two questions:

1) What version of J! were you updating from?
2) How did you go about performing the update?

I've searched on this error and for some people doing a database fix takes care of the issue.
That's the usual cure but it may not work if (a) the site was not updated J! using the Joomla! Update component, (b) the original site was originally created from one of those "quickstart" installation kits, or (c) from a combination of other [unknown] factors that jeopardised the database conversion during the update procedure. I mean, only you know what you did and how you did things. We're just playing "catch-up". ;)

It is possible to manipulate the database if you know your way around database tables but that's an area best left to DB experts. I guess you have nothing to lose: you can't use your website now and, I imagine, you could get lucky and figure out the solution for yourself. It's like betting on a 100-to-1 longshot.

If you want to venture into the mysteries of DB administration, I suggest that you examine the table structure from a working website that uses J! 3.9.13 and attempt to replicate the structure in your currently-broken website. I haven't tried to man-handle my way out of a mess like this myself; I also don't have a lot of spare time to try, either.

I know the previous version was an 3.8.x. I don’t know the last number.
I performed the update using the Joomla update from administration.
I know the error did not exist in the previous version, we were able to edit and save without this error showing up and preventing saving.
I’m not a Joomla newbie. I’ve been working with Joomla since 1.5. I have had bad/partial installs etc but this one is different because all the “fixes” don’t seem to work for me.

Thank you for your reply and listen carefully to the advice that I am about to give you.

You have nothing to lose at the moment with your broken website; it's broken. Leave it alone and let's move on.

1) Restore the website from the backup you made before the J! update. Make sure you delete the filesystem and DROP all the database tables associated with the broken website.

2) After restoring the website from the backup, ensure you have Joomla! debug mode enabled, the Error reporting level set to "Maximum" and confirm there are no errors with the restored [J! 3.8] website.

3) Use the Forum Post Assistant and provide the information about the J! 3.8 website.

4) Await further instructions after doing these things.

This should take you about 15 minutes. At least, after 15 minutes, you will have a website that works and we may have information that will help us to understand what the J! update process doesn't work properly. OK? :)

1. Restored site using backup. Joomla backup version was 3.8.10.
2. Error does not occur on save in this version.
3. Maximum error reporting enabled. No errors are displaying.
4. Here is the FPA.

Re: Update 3.8.x to 3.9.13 results in error

Thank you very much for the FPA report.

There are not too many things obviously "wrong" with this configuration and, therefore, the following observations are suggestions that you can use or ignore as you see fit.

1) A number of outdated, J! 2.5 extensions are still evident (even if they are not actively used), and I would suggest that you uninstall them (just to tidy things up) before going further. These include the templates atomic, beez20, beez5 and bluestork. They were designed for J! 2.5 and—pure and simple—they just plain don't work with J! 3.x under any circumstances.

2) The version of RSFirewall! (which is used with administration of a J! website) is a little outdated. I don't know what Populate v1.6.4 does nor do I know what JoomlaCK Pugin Manager Control Pane (v1.0.0 DEVELOP) does, either. However, if you don't know what these things do as well, (and they're involved in the administration of J! 3.x and therefore the ability to update J!) then it may be prudent to uninstall them.

3) The FPA reports a number of "question marks" on extensions and, for that reason, I would suggest that you run Extensions » Manage » Discover to see if some of these extensions have not been properly installed. It's always a good idea to eliminate the obvious or likely candidates that could impact on the ability to update J!

4) The PHP quotas for Max. Upload Size, Max. Upload Size and Memory Limit appear to be sufficient but, remembering that these quotas are shared between all websites owned by the account in a shared hosting environment, the last-mentioned of these may be a bit thin and, if it's possible to do so, I would try to increase the Memory Limit (double or quadruple it) before attempting to update. The Max. Execution Time of 30 seconds also should be sufficient unless the server is extremely busy doing other things at update time and, perhaps, increasing that to 60 seconds may be advisable.

I'm guessing that the update process may "time-out" or exhaust some other processing quota and fail to do whatever is needed to finalise the update (e.g. make database changes). There were a few changes made between J! 3.8 and J! 3.9 but I can't remember if any of those changes involved modifying database tables (e.g. the _users table). Someone else may be able to comment more about that.

Could you therefore please make the suggested changes as I've listed above and re-run the FPA report. I think your site almost has a clean bill of health but it's probably better to be conservative and make the changes I've suggested.

Thanks again and back to you.

Thank you for the detailed step by step Sozzled. I will follow your suggestions. Once I have everything clean and still functioning, I'll make a new backup before I start doing any updates. I thought maybe at this point it might be wise to do a step by step update using the update packages? That way it would go in steps and I can save a backup after each step. I'll report back (might be a couple of days for me to go through all this). I truly appreciate the help.

I have not seen many cases where performing incremental updates achieves an advantages over using the Joomla! Update component "normally". You might try one or two (get past J! 3.9.10 to, say, J! 3.9.0) and then go the remaining way through to J! 3.9.13 but I have no confidence that incremental is better than just doing things normally. Remember also that there were a couple of "false starts" in the sequence of releases during J! 3.9 and a couple of updates should not be used.

As a general principle, pare the number of extensions back to what's required and uninstall the rest and then proceed with the update in the usual manner. Certainly, regular backups throughout the process are the best insurance policy you have in case something goes pear-shaped.

As I said before, attend to the housekeeping, re-run the FPA report, and we can offer our opinion as to whether we think things are safe enough to update after that. Cheers.

Sozzled
First, I must thank you again for all your help. I do appreciate all your instructions.
I was getting some massive errors when I tried to Discover/Install some of the items that were not installed.
Because of that, I went a different route to fix the site using SP Transfer to help move from 3.8 into a fresh 3.9.13 version.
1. Installed fresh copy of 3.9.13 in sub folder.
2. Installed SP Transfer
3. Connected SP Transfer to the old 3.8 site.
4. Transferred core items.
5. Installed the components we are using and then transferred their database table data from the old site. Luckily Docman has a really decent export/import that I was able to use.
6. Installed the template.
7. Checked templates, modules, plugins etc and made sure everything was up to date.
Result is a nice clean site in a new database. :)
