Some articles I can't save, save & close, or close in the backend. When clicking any of those buttons, it loads a 404 error. The error page URL is
https://xxx.com/administrator/index.php ... dit&id=148.

This is very similar to the URL when I'm editing the article =
https://xxx.com/administrator/index.php ... dit&id=148
The only difference is &view=article

Articles that close correctly go to the article list:
https://retreatsresources.com/administr ... w=articles

The problem articles are not in a single category, and other articles in the same category will save and close.

I have this same problem on another Joomla 3.5.25 website. Both are using the same administrator template Isis but otherwise have mostly different 3rd party extensions. This website demonstrated below uses YOOtheme Pro frontend template. But the other website with this same problem is using a different frontend template, so it's not likely YOOtheme Pro is the issue.

Here's a video illustrating the issue = https://share.getcloudapp.com/RBuYNb62

I had my hosting company Liquid Web temporarily disable mod_sec to see if maybe that was the problem, but the articles still load 404 when trying to save or close. Another post in the Joomla forum mentioned mod_sec was the culprit on their website. No luck for me though.

Folders should be 755. Files 644 (except configuration.php 444)
Save global config and see if configuration.php changes to 444
With configuration.php 444 can you save global config?

Do those articles use a plugin code or any other code?
Try setting the frontend template to Protostar.

Error Reporting: none
Rather than filter all errors, a couple of temporary changes could allow you to troubleshoot the problem.

Go to System - Global Configuration - System - Debug Settings and set 'Debug System' to Yes.

Then go to the Server tab and change the level of error reporting from 'None' to 'Maximum'.

Repeat the save operations that do not work. If the above settings do not display full details of PHP warnings, notices and errors, go to Extensions - Plugins and enable and configure the plugin System - Debug to 'Log Almost Everything' for your specific user group, for example 'Super User', so that the front end users do not see the debug output.

The log can then be downloaded from administrator/logs/everything.php. Post the relevant lines here for advice.

On the other hand, as seen in your video, were all the problem articles created using YOOtheme Builder? The following topic from last year in the YOOtheme forum discusses 404 errors: Clicking on Yootheme Builder button and obtain Error 404.

Toivo,

I'm experiencing the same issue on another website that doesn't use YOOtheme Pro builder, so I don't think that is the problem...

Here are the relevant lines from the everything.php error log:

Website #1. This is the website I was referring to in my first post - the one with YOOtheme Pro template.

This is Website #2. This one uses a different template - not YOOtheme but is still having the same problem:

Webdongle

I checked permissions and folders are 755, Files 644, configuration.php 444.
I can save global config - configuration.php remains 444.

Do those articles use a plugin code or any other code? - Yes, the second website uses J2Store short code to add products in some articles, but other articles without the short code are still loading 404 when saving.

Try setting the frontend template to Protostar. - Would the frontend template affect functionality in the backend? I tried switching to a different administrator template (from Isis to Hathor) but there was no difference - the problem still existed.

Yes occasionally. Don't ask me why because I don't know. All I know is that I had ga problem with Admin once and (on the advice of someone else) I used the default Joomla frontend Template. The reason was explained to me but I can't remember.

I switched the frontend template to Protostar as Webdongle suggested. It didn't make any difference. Still loads a 404 error when saving or closing the article.

Might there be some hint to the cause in the debug information I posted yesterday?

remove your .htaccess files and remove your templates error.php

Does the 404 now magically turn into a 403 Forbidden or a http 50x error?

If so this is 100% your servers mod_security, Admin Tools WAF or other server side security that is then in turn trying to load an error page provided by your (incorrect server) configuration and its reporting a 404 because it can't find the ERROR PAGE your apache has configured as an error page.

Also, do you have an insane number of User Groups (ACL Levels)? If so what is the value of your PHPs max_input_vars value? The default is 1000 but some web hosts lower this!

Thanks for the suggestion. This was one of the first things I tried before I posted this problem on the forum. No difference.

I always disable JCH Optimize Pro plugin and constantly clearing Joomla and browser cache when editing my sites. Doesn't help.

Only have default user groups.
max_input_vars value is set to 1000.

I already have SCL Manager installed. Diagnostics report "No asset issues detected." I rebuilt the assets table anyway. Didn't solve the problem.

I disabled .htaccess and the template's error.php files by renaming them via FTP. I disabled Global Configuration > Search Engine Friendly URLs so the frontend would continue to work without .htaccess.

Tested saving one of the problem articles and it returns:

Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator at [email protected] to inform them of the time this error occurred, and the actions you performed just before this error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

browser console shows this error =
/favicon.ico:1 Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 ()

I disabled Admin Tools component at Extensions > Manage > Manage and tried again. Still gives 404 error. So unless I need to disable all Admin Tools plugins and not just the component, this leads me to believe the problem is with mod_security on my dedicated server at Liquid Web. Last week I thought that might be the problem, so I had Liquid Web tech support temporarily disable mod_security. But the problem still existed with mod_security disabled so I thought that ruled it out as the culprit.

I'm not familiar with mod_security. Are there settings that can be adjusted, or is it just on or off?

So now you correctly get a 500 Internal Server Error... now turn on development error reporting in Joomla global config and debug mode on in joomla global config, and repeat how you got to the 500 error...

You should get an error...

(The 404 means it could not load the 500.shtml or similar file)

mod_security is a rules based firewall. Normally web hosts have tens of thousands of rules and blindly load another tens of thousands blindly without checking knock on effects for sites. It is a good firewall but needs honing to sites sometimes.

Most web hosts will give you some control to exclude some rules, or turn it off. Very rarely though they will tell you which rules are causing a problem :-(

I repeated all previous changes = disabled .htaccess and template's error.php file. Then in Global Config I enabled the Debug System and set Error Reporting to Development. Then I opened one of the troublesome articles and tried to Save & Close. It still only shows the generic 500 Internal Server Error with nothing in the browser console. Where would I find the error I'm looking for?

I checked the hosting account via FTP. There is no error_log. Usually I see error_log in the site root. Nothing in /log/ or /administrator/logs/

There's nothing there because (a) you haven't enabled J! debug mode or set the error reporting level to "maximum" and (b) you said that you've "disabled" your .htaccess. As I wrote above:

I had already restored the .htaccess so I'll have SEF URLs. Thanks for the reminder to enable J! debug and error reporting to maximum. I did that and then attempted to save one of the problem articles. There is now an error_log in /administrator. This is what it says...

[30-Mar-2021 21:13:54 UTC] PHP Warning: preg_match(): Compilation failed: quantifier does not follow a repeatable item at offset 1 in /home/rtreatsrsorces/public_html/libraries/src/Updater/Adapter/ExtensionAdapter.php on line 133

I still don't find any more specifics on the 500 error when .htaccess and template/error.php is disabled. Just the same generic internal server error message I posted earlier.

Re: Cannot save some Joomla articles in backend

I contacted my hosting company support and explained my problem and that it was probably related to mod_security. I told them what Phil suggested "your server's mod_security that is trying to load an error page provided by your (incorrect server) configuration and its reporting a 404 because it can't find the ERROR PAGE your apache has configured as an error page." The support tech understood that. He checked if mod_security was blocking requests, and then whitelisted the URI /administrator/index.php? on the 3 websites that had this issue. After that I was able to save and close all articles.

Thanks everyone for all your helpful suggestions to narrow this down and get it fixed!!
