504 Gateway Timeout Error in Backend Administrator

Hey guys!

I have a problem with my site, I have a Joomla 3.8.8 site (I know it's old but can't update at the moment) and can't access the article list in the backend administrator, everything else works well, the frontend works as well even I can post new articles but when I try to access the article list to edit past news or pages I get a 504 Gateway Timeout error.


The database has maybe 6500 articles, I don't know what else could it be.

I have other sites in the same server, all with the same version but those works as usual. Only this site has this problem.

The time-out is a server error - your web host can probably help you track down what is causing it. They will probably say "It's Joomla - refer to them for support", but we can't do anything until we know the exact (or even possible) cause if it's at the server level. You may have identified the issue - overloaded database - your host can advise if this is nearing it's allocated size limit and that sort of thing.

Can you access server logs - e.g. php error log (another thing your host can possible assist with).

System Config issues
*Overloaded Database - there could be well a problem with nearing resource limits concerning your hosting? e.g. it seems to time out only when you access the article manager and it doesn't succeed listing the articles? How many records/lines per page do you have listing e.g. 50 per screen or more/less (if you can find that info)?
*You have some incorrect folder permissions (770) The recommended setting is 755.
*Configuration file should be 444
*Potential file ownership issues (that's a server configuration problem your host can help you fix).

System Updates
*Joomla 3.8.8 is four years out of date - curious to know why you haven't updated, or couldn't update within the last four years?
*Are all extensions current?
*Do you have (a) current/regular backup(s)?

*Check with your host for assistance if required with:
1. Setting correct file permissions
2. Fix the potential file ownership issue.
3. PHP 7.3 is EOL next month - can you switch to PHP 7.4?

DIY System Maintenance
1. Akeeba Backup (it seems it's not installed) or another backup utility available to you.
2. Update Joomla CMS to 3.10 ASAP
3. Update extensions.
