High CPU Load with spikes

Hi,

Our website is a magazine (lots of daily articles) run on Joomla 3.10 (recently upgrade from 3.7). We have CPU spikes and mostly high CPU load (7x vCore 3.1Ghz):

45 / 100 (45%)
I/O Usage
3.67 MB/s / 24 MB/s (15.31%)
Physical Memory Usage
1.57 GB / 20 GB (7.86%)
IOPS
225 / 20,480 (1.1%)
Number of Processes
36 / 4,000 (0.9%)

The number of processes is too low but CPU load is very high and It'll peak @ 100% sometimes. ]t seems enable/disabling plugins/modules doesn't affect the CPU load or spikes but when we set the System Cache to "File" or "OFF" from Redis, we see 100% CPU load that needs manual process killing to return to normal.

If anybody could solve the problem, we're more than eager to thank him with donation for problem solving.

First up, I note FPA shows Jooma 2.5 templates which shouldn't be there (Bluestork, atomic 2.5, Beez5,beez_20). Uninstall those for starters. (probably not a cause of the CPU usage issue). They are not required if you're using Gantry as it appears you are (G5 Hydrogen template (?).

I think if it's a heavy load on the server, I would start with your web host and ask them to help you track down what might be causing it. Your routine visitor traffic could be contributing to that along with bots like search engine crawlers and the like. If it's a shared server, then it may not be your site causing the CPU spikes.

Your server logs may give you some ideas as to the activity at the time of the CPU spikes (match approximate times of the CPU spikes to the activity in the server log). I'm sure your web host can help with that.

Try updating PHP to version 8.x since 7.4.x is now obsolete. 8.x is faster and more efficient. PHP 8 will work with 3.10 but you will need to check that your extensions do also.

I think the site needs some attention concerning extensions, especially concerning Ark Editor and all those plugins "Unknown". Try reinstalling Ark Editor (latest version on JED August 2022): https://extensions.joomla.org/extension/jck-editor/
