CPU Utilization Issues

Postby SForsgren » Sat Aug 26, 2017 3:18 pm

My hosting company migrated to CentOS recently and since doing so, my CPU is always very high. I don't think my site has changed in any way, but they are now suggesting I need a larger environment.

I see processes such as:
/opt/cpanel/ea-php56/root/usr/bin/php-cgi /home/user/public_html/index.php

which appears to be taking 18-50% of the CPU for a single instance. How can I further evaluate what might be abnormal or causing such high CPU utilization within Joomla itself? I personally don't think there is a Joomla issue, but the hosting company is pointing the finger at Joomla.

Each instance of index.php seems to take about 20% of the CPU - sometimes up to 50%.

I am on Joomla 3.7.5. Thanks for any insights.

Thank you,
Scott

When I put the site in debug mode, I see the attached. How do I further isolate why some of these issues are showing up? Thanks much

Use PHP7.1. It is 35% - 40% faster and more secure compared to PHP 5.6 which has seen EoL.

Hi Leo, If the hosting company has only 7.0 at this time, would you still suggest moving from 5.6 to 7.0? How often does this create a problem for Joomla and the various extensions or is it generally fairly smooth? Thank you

Not many hosting companies support 7.1 but if the CPU utilization becomes a problem try upgrading to a 7.1 or change hosting company.

I moved to 5.6 to 7.0 and haven't had any issue at all so far on my Joomla site. Currently using Joomla version 3.7.5.

Joomla runs smoothly on PHP 7.0.x as well on PHP 7.1.9 We run all our sites on latest PHP without issues. You might find that some older extensions won't fly with PHP 7.x but you need to connect with your extension developer to verify this or replace the extensions that are not compatible
