I have the same experience with my large site - I restored back to 3.7.5 because of the speed difference. My smaller sites don't seem to have the issue as much. I'm hoping that future updates will be improved.

hi kbgorman, yes i think that the issue is on the number of article, if you have a bug on article on a little blog (akka 1000 article) it will be not seen but the same bug x 15.000 article, that make an huge impact, but no one of the joomla communitie seem care of that..... : (

If you have so many articles and you have performance issue it s good to have your own server with a very good configuration(for example a good vps to have the cpu and the ram only for your sites and not in a shared hosting like i guess you are now, with thousands websites to eat the cpu and the ram of the server) The same problem you will have and with wordpress with so many articles in shared hosting account.

we do have a vps ; )))) All work fine in 3.7.5, the update to 3.8.0 or 3.8.1 push the server from 6sec page load up to 12 sec, and heavy cpu usage, so we rolled back, as other... but no one at joomla team take care of that issue because there is not a lot of site with such number of article.

Have you looked at the issue tracker to see if there are any performance related issues filed, or filed an issue with data to help fix it? Performance issues won't get fixed out-of-the-blue without issues and solid data being reported.
So long and thanks for all the fish.

Once again the question was asked: How many Joomla articles you have enabled? Even with limited English language skills this should not be hard to answer?

How many articles is in one category and how many archived? Archived articles show in a category list/blog on 3.8.1. See this topic.

Folamour, I see you are using .png for your opening slideshow. I saved the files as jpg and reduced
the sizes 16%, also consider enabling Gzip.

hi all PR #19261 is included in 3.8.4 and 3.8.5. This PR is still waiting for one more human test.

PR #19284 who offer an impressive gain in perf, need one more human test to best integrated in joomla, if you have a huge site 10k or more article, test it and send feedback to dev.

I'm losing my mind over this. I updated from Joomla 3.7.5 months ago and things became very slow so I reverted back and everything was fine. I waited and waited and finally did the upgrade to 3.8.11 yesterday. My site has slowed to a crawl again... what on earth do I do?? When using Joomla 3.7.5 everything is swell - anything else it's a disaster. Am I stuck forever at 3.7.5??

My site is a large historical site with a LOT of articles.

Any advice would be appreciated. I'm getting ready to do the restore again. I'm at a loss...Is there anyone that can help me or point me in the right direction? THANK YOU.

FYI, my site is a historical site with almost 6000 articles in 363 categories. (I also use the extension CW Multicats to assign different categories to the same article.)

Is there somewhere I should report this? I would really like to see this fixed. Everything works fine in 3.7.5, but slows to a crawl in all newer versions.

Thank you for your response, SharkyKZ.

I enabled debug but I don't know what I'm looking at. I'm just a simple Joomla user.

However, I think I've gotten some clues since I was forced to change hosts (my wonderful IXWebhosting was sold to Site5) - it's a long sad story but after an Akeeba restore back to 3.7.5 failed and the host did more fiddling with configuration files so the site would load, the site came back as 3.8.11 (not restored back to 3.7.5) but with the multicats extension disabled (and a lot of my extensions not working) - there was no slowdown.

On my test WAMP when I updated from 3.7.5 to 3.8.11 with the most current Multicat extension, the page loading was much slower but when I restored back to 3.7.5, all was good again. (I tried to restore to Site5, but it failed - as it is now it's a big mess from which you should draw no conclusions - except that it's very slow)

I have contacted the developer of CW Multicategories, who has been extremely helpful in the past, with a detailed description of my experience and observations. Something changed in Joomla and/or Multicategories since 3.7.5. Interestingly, after the failed restore on the server, when I enabled the Multicats extension, it was the old 3.7.5 one and there was no slowdown - when I added the latest version, it had errors installing it (not an unusual experience with my new host) and that's when the slowdown started again - so I'm thinking the extension may be a big part of the problem.

At this point I have a poorly functioning, barely working site on the server - it's time for me to find a better host and just do a kickstart restore of a backup before the migration was done to Site5 when Joomla 3.7.5 and all the extensions were working correctly. However, since I did the Joomla update and enabled the latest Multicat extension on two separate hosts and experienced significant slowdowns on both, I think it's fair to say that there's a problem somewhere in Joomla and/or Multicats after 3.7.5

Hopefully some genius Joomla guy will be able to solve this. Since having multiple categories is VITAL to my site, if I have to stay with Joomla 3.7.5, then that's what I'll do. I hope the problem will be obvious to those of you who understand the inter-workings and that I, a simple Joomla user, will be able to have a large historical site with a lot of articles assigned to multiple categories using the latest Joomla version.

I really appreciate your response and interest. I welcome any advice or suggestions you have. Thank you.

I am no genius!

I can't "solve" anything but I have some experience in locating potential sources of problems. I can only advise; it's for other people to choose to use that advice or not.

I would recommend that the first step in identifying the potential cause(s) of a problem (or problems) is to use the Forum Post Assistant tool. It won't instantly fix anything but it puts everyone in a better position to offer our recommendations and assistance.

Look at Profile Information and Database Queries. See what takes the longest time to execute.
