optimize page speed: which plugin to use?

Post by KEComm » Wed Dec 13, 2017 9:34 am

I am currently using JCH Optimize, but I am not totally happy with it.

Which other plugins can you recommend and why?

Hi,

This is not the answer you are probably looking for, but my personal opinion is to not use a plugin for this. Most optimisation plugins cause issues. Here is what I suggest:
  1. Use the correct extensions from well known developers. Their extensions should be already optimised. Do not rely on bad extensions.
  2. Use only the extensions you need. Uninstall any extension you do not need.
  3. If you are using third-party templates, make sure that you get them from well-known template providers. Those templates should be optimised out of the box.
  4. If you are using your own template, make sure to minify the CSS and JS files of the template. If possible, combine all CSS files to one. Do the same for the JS files of your template.
  5. If possible move the script files to the bottom of the page. Test this before applying as may cause JS errors.
  6. Optimise the template images.
  7. Enable GZIP on your server.
  8. If possible switch to HTTP2.
I am seriously thinking to build an extension that will do all this stuff without causing any issues.

I do and most are not. They use multiple JS and CSS files.
