Hello VinnyH

If it is a new install, why do you install Joomla! 3.8.11-Stable (Amani) 31-July-2018

You should install Jommla 3.9.12 and php 7.2 or 7.3
Cordialement, Bruno28 :)

I will recommend changing the session handler from database to php after update to 3.9.12

Thank you all, I will work on these suggestions today and report back. My host (Hostgator) is only up to php 7.1 so that may be an issue for now.

They've always been good to me with my small account so hopefully they are bumping up php by December.

Thanks, this has helped logging in, so far. Unfortunately my host has not implemented php 7.2 yet so that may help other issues.
Best Always,

FWIW:

Image

I am surprised by the claim that Hostgator does not have PHP 7.2 (see https://www.hostgator.com/help/article/ ... -you-using); I don't use Hostgator myself by I understand, from talking with another member of the forum community, that it should be possible to use PHP 7.2.

I don't know if this will have any influence on the "annoying login delays" experienced by the OP. A more likely cause for delays may be the "security checking" software installed on the website (e.g. Securitycheck Pro (3.1.9)) and, as a test to see if this is the cause, I would disable the extension(s), clear the site cache and browser cache, and try again.

Thanks, I am on a “Shared” account at HG so that seems to limit some options. I was told that php 7.2 is on the horizon but no date yet for when. I will explore the securitypro ext angles.

Last night I was talking with another member of this community who uses Hostgator, on a shared account, about updating to PHP 7.2. He informed me that Hostgator had already provided him with information—I understand it's a one-line change to the .htaccess file—that should allow you to do this. PHP 7.2 should not be "on the horizon"; PHP 7.2 was first released nearly two years ago and PHP 7.3 was first released nearly one year ago. If anything should be "on the horizon", it's probably a matter of contacting your webhosting provider and asking them how to make the change.

It's your business, of course, what you decide to do. I'm simply providing you with the information that I have.

I appreciate hearing that. I was on their chat today and the girl tried to switch my acct to 7.2 with phphandler but my Joomla control panel had an error showing a 5.x php version. I then went back to 7.1.
I admit to knowing the basics but frankly the deeper tech issues are where I need help. I usually get that here and in the HG chat. I can follow orders once I get them. I’ll be calling into HG help when I get the chance. Seems I need to find the right troubleshooter there.
Thanks again,
Vinny
PS: their PHPselector app in the c-panel only goes up to 7.1 as an option. Seems you need to ask beyond that.

Okay, what's this mean? Just started getting this while working on adding new articles.
"An error has occurred.
500 Unknown column 'a.note' in 'field list' "

Update: I can see categories but this happens when I try to click on "Articles". The category shows the 2 articles I just added. ???

I have never seen this in my time using Joomla. I did disable all the SecurityPro pieces. I am back to php 7.1 until I call the host again.
Thanks,
Vinny

Solved this problem with not seeing my articles. Googled and found it's a common problem with Joomla 3.9 and had to rebuild my database then all was fine. :)

It's not so much a common problem with J! 3.9; it's a common problem for people who leave everything to the last moment and have to update from their currently installed version of J! (that was released, say, over one year ago) to the latest version of J!. These common problems are usually overcome (if not even non-existent) if people routinely update their site software. ;)

You do understand that not everyone lives to do this and some people are learning along the way. Not everyone is as special as you.

We are also on a shared server, but HG moved us up to 7.2 simply by raising a ticket. They were really helpful & worked closely to ensure everything worked ok.

Re: Annoying Login delays and repeats needed to access both ends

Hostgator can be a little confusing. If I login via cPanel, I only get the option to upgrade to php 7.1.

So I see how that can be confusing.

Hopefully some of the other options of using htaccess or opening a support ticket will help.

Whatever preferences and skills you have and not have a first advice is to ask or hire someone that can give you good accurate advice for a good Joomla hosting provider and the web hosting package you should use so your site work for these requirements.

Updating Joomla is 30 second process with a click on a button in backend even for novice people and you can always do this at least one month after a new release is done and be secure that you have a continuously working site that follow standard procedures of normal web site care taking.

Darb,
I agree on the basics there. I learn a lot by asking questions here and Googling. This is more of a hobby for me than most here who are in business developing websites. I'm a retired special ed teacher who is only now getting time to explore Joomla more. I have 6 sites for businesses and musicians I know locally. Basic sites with maybe a gallery, a bunch of links, and some Paypal buttons. They are all quite happy with how their sites turned out.
I am exploring a site for a friend that has me learning about shopping carts and all the variables involved. It's not a rush and it seems to be going well. Most people have been really helpful here. The great thing about Joomla is that you don't have to know css, html, php, and much more to start seeing what's possible. The fun is learning these things as I go along. I admire those who do know these aspects of web design.
Through my years here there always seems to be some who condescend with their comments. believe me, as someone who has worked with tough inner city kids, no one here can bother me. My nature is to appreciate and respect constructive criticism.
Thanks,
VinnyH

Hello VinnyH

Glad you solved your issue and you update your site

If you don't have time to spend much time on your sites, at least try to follow them regularly to avoid greater issues

You will save time by updating them

Have a good day :)
Cordialement, Bruno28 :)
