How to identify the cause of site slowness

Post by gavinhanly » Thu Dec 05, 2019 1:55 pm

For a while now, I've been experiencing site slowness, particularly on non-cached (admin or logged in) pages. When I ask my host what the problem is, I'm told that the problem is with my site's SQL queries - and they don't seem to be able to help me any more than that.

The latest instruction that I've been given is "you can try optimizing your site and checking these processes from it which are causing the load. Alternatively, a fellow developer could assist you with this."

I previously asked them to help me identify the slow queries and I got the image attached.

I've been using Joomla for a while - but my SQL/server knowledge is extremely poor. So I'm really not even sure where I should be starting. I'm assuming I go to cpanel tools - but what's the usual process for troubleshooting these kinds of problems?

Any pointers would be incredibly useful. Assume you're talking to a total SQL newbie!

You could start with an overall look at your site using Googles Page Speed tool:

Also try disabling any unused plugins or Extensions. One of those items may have a slow sql query.

The above is just general advice and may not identify a specific query that is running slow.

Enable Debug in Global Configuration and look at the SQL queries at the bottom of the page.
