Site Slow - Uninstall, Unpublish, or Uninstall?

Post by gmrob » Mon Aug 24, 2020 1:38 pm

In trying to find ways to increase the speed of a sluggish Joomla site, there are quit a number of unpublished modules, and disabled components. Is there a speed difference between an unpublished, disabled, or uninstalled feature? I've read somewhere you should remove the things you don't need, but does it make a real difference, as long as it is unpublished or disabled?

I am concerned of breaking something if I uninstall.

Thanks in advance for making this clear.

Regards,
Geoff

Some first basic tips

First update your Joomla site and extra extensions to latest version and your hosting to latest version of PHP, MySQL Postgress latest version.

Run phpMyadmin to repair and optimize your database tables. Install some Joomla extra cache extensions server and pages.

And check that your hosting have good enough memory, cpu and process power for your site without limitations :pop

check your site with performance indicators to see how to optimize images, css , js etc and just unpublish things you dont need and use. https://gtmetrix.com/ or maybe disable some core Joomla extensions if you know what you are doing https://dgrammatiko.github.io/on-a-diet/

Sluggish? Change server or turn the cache on, don't make crap (scrollpage is a good example:)) and finally find what is causing the slowdown.

The first step to optimize your website is choosing the right hosting company.
Choose a server with LiteSpeed, update to the latest version of PHP.

Get rid of the extensions you are not using, and use a caching plugin.
Succes ! ;)

If an Extension is unpublished you should be able to safely remove it.

But backup your site before uninstalling just in case you do run into trouble.

To build on darb's suggestion, also run your site through Googles Page Speed tool

https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/

and follow their recommendations.
