Latest version is Joomla 3.6.5. You update your site through Administrator-->components-->Joomla update and hit update. That is all to do

We're seeing the same exact problem here..

I did the updates manually to see when the problem began .. I went from 3.4.8 and made it all the way to 3.6.2 and the moment I got to 3.6.3 I got the 404 Component Not Found error on the site.

Even if I try upgrading from there to 3.6.5 the issue remains..

I found the problem on our site but it remains a mystery.. The component in question had been working flawlessly on all previous versions.. when upgrading to 3.6.3+ it threw the component not found error but didn't specify which component.

I edited libraries/cms/component/helper.php around line 370 above where I saw

" throw new Exception(JText::_('JLIB_APPLICATION_ERROR_COMPONENT_NOT_FOUND'), 404);"

above that I put

print $option . " / " . $path;
exit;

The output add com_content as $option and the path to some other extension's folder with /content.php after it .. that shouldn't be happening, I have no idea why it would. We use the custom component builder as a base for our extensions and we have dozens of others being used. The moment I just created a blank content.php file it started working.

Any clue why this would be a thing?

At any rate, if this helps you out, great! don't forget to remove those two lines you added in helper.php .. I wish the Joomla error page would provide more details like this, even debug mode didn't get me this far..

Look white file it's looking for in the $path variable, if it doesn't exist.. try creating a blank file by that name.
