Fatal error System Information
Have now got my test joomla 3.4.8 [from 2.5] site working pretty well. However, I'm getting one error message - I have errors turned to maximum - when I try to access System Information.
Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 8912896) (tried to allocate 196608 bytes) in /home/windsorc/public_html/joomla3/administrator/modules/mod_menu/tmpl/default_enabled.php on line 356
Any ideas please? Many thanks
Robert

Re: Fatal error System Information
One of the PHP core settings in your server, memory_limit, is 8M which is too low to run Joomla.
If you do not have an option in the cPanel provided by your host, you need to talk to your hosting company and get them to increase it to at least 32M and preferably to 128M or 256M because some extensions use more memory than others.

Re: Fatal error System Information
That's odd. I already asked them to increase my memory limit and they did. My cPanel shows my PHP memory_limit as 128M. Could it be something else?

Re: Fatal error System Information
My hosting company has now tried several ways to correct the memory_limit problem at their end. But seems like the problem may not be a setting that has anything to do with the hosting company. Is there some other configuration in Joomla itself that could be changed to fix the problem? Or could it be a template problem? Any help appreciated.

Re: Fatal error System Information
I'm now getting different out of memory error messages whenever I try to access System Information. For example,
Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 8912896) (tried to allocate 3072 bytes) in /home/windsorc/public_html/joomla3/libraries/joomla/filter/output.php on line 34;
Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 8912896) (tried to allocate 196608 bytes) in /home/windsorc/public_html/joomla3/administrator/modules/mod_menu/tmpl/default_enabled.php on line 356
So it appears there is plenty of memory available but for some reason some php scripts can't access it.
I also tried the php script to brute force test memory allocations as suggested in http://magazine.joomla.org/issues/issue ... PHP-memory. It also showed plenty of memory available.

Re: Fatal error System Information
The cPanel can show something else but what matters is how much memory PHP allocates to Joomla and your error messages show that it is just over 8M.My cPanel shows my PHP memory_limit as 128M. Could it be something else?
The directive memory_limit can be set in quite a number of way, in addition to the main php.ini file of the server:
- the .htaccess file
- the Apache configuration file httpd.conf
- the Joomla directory in a php.ini or .user.ini file
In addition, the limit can be set in a PHP script by using the ini_set function, but the usual suspects are the .htaccess file or a php.ini file in the main Joomla folder.

Re: Fatal error System Information
Thanks very much for your reply. However, there is no php.ini or .user.ini file in my main Jooma folder.
The .htaccess file doesn't appear to contain any reference to allocation of memory. I don't have access to the httpd.conf file on the server. So I'm still stumped.

Re: Fatal error System Information
Then check the index.php file of your template(s) and the main index.php, and also configuration.php for the ini_set() function.

Re: Fatal error System Information
Checked the index.php file of template but no reference to memory limitations that I can see. I have also asked the template designer just to be sure. The index.php in main Joomla folder doesn't appear to refer to any memory limitations. Where is the ini_set() function please? Haven't come across it.

No ini_set() in configuration.php in main Joomla folder.

Re: Fatal error System Information
If there are no files like php.ini, .user.ini or .htaccess which set the lower limit, the only option is to search for the string 'ini_set' from the all folders containing the Joomla source code.
If you do not have shell access to the server, this can be done by downloading those folders to your workstation and then using a utility like diff or WinGrep.

Re: Fatal error System Information
I've now backup up and restored my Joomla 3 site on to XAMPP on my local machine.
And the Systems Information link works just fine! So does that mean the problem is not in my installation of Joomla on the host server but in the server settings that I need to ask them to somehow fix? I've already done that and they don't seem to be able to find why the error is occurring. They think it must be something in the Joomla settings.

Well done.
Looks like it. Now you should be able to convince your host.does that mean the problem is not in my installation of Joomla on the host server but in the server settings that I need to ask them to somehow fix?

Re: Fatal error System Information
Was there ever a resolution to this issue? I am having the exact same problem when I try to reach "System Information".
For the record, here is the math:
There should be plenty of memory left. There is also plenty of memory in PHP.ini, I checked.
This would not be the first time a false memory error masks something else. It has happened to me before, but never with this Admin link.
Code: Select all
Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 17301504) (tried to allocate 126165 bytes) in /home4/ab1037/public_html/16/chcdemo1/libraries/joomla/document/html.php on line 705For the record, here is the math:

17301504 - (Allocated mem)

Re: Fatal error System Information
The issue was indeed with the server settings. My host fixed it.
