Problem Updating Joomla from 3.7.4 to 3.8.0

Postby Galaxyconsult » Sat Sep 30, 2017 7:59 am

Hello,

I am having a problem updating Joomla from version 3.7.4 to version 3.8.0.
I get an error: AJAX Loading Error: Forbidden

I read few posts here on this topic: the content is quite technical and I am not a developer and so I don't quite understand what I need to do and I can't take a risk that site can get down. I am just a regular Joomla user. I don't want to do anything that could take the site down. What can I do to solve this problem?

It looks like quite a few people have this problem. Are Joomla developers aware of this problem and are they perhaps are going to fix this problem in the next update and if this is the case maybe I should just wait for the next update?

Thank you in advance.

It could be an issue with your server side max_execution_memory_limit

Options suggested by others with the same error
- Backup entire site. Upload the package via FTP and unpack to add the files

See these solutions

Thank you, jackrabbit for your reply.

I extended server max execution memory limit to 120 and it did not solve the problem.

The site is backed up.

I don't know how to upload the package via FTP and how to unpack to add the files.

I did all previous update via Joomla admin and never had any problem for many updates.

Is there anything I can do from Joomla admin or from cPanel perhaps?

Also, if I wait for the next update, will this problem be solved in the next update?

The hosting control panel has a file manager which will allow file uploading (FTP) and has a tool for extraction of the .zip package. To extract the .zip package, select it then click Extract button. See the image for cpanel
cpanel.jpg

Before you upload and unzip the Joomla upgrade package,
- select all the files and folders in the public_html directory with the Select All button
- then click Compress. Do not close the browser before the compression completes.
- once the notice of completion displays, click the Reload button see the results

Note: if you have an excessive amount of images, videos and audio in the images directory, you should exclude it from the selected list, else the process could take forever.

Thank you very much, jackrabbit.

I will attempt to do what you described.

Could this work bring the site down?

It's possible that something can go wrong which is why it's important to backup before

Many thanks again, jackrabbit.

I am very apprehensive to do it because even if I have backup, I would not know how to restore the site and I would have a nightmare. This is my consulting site, so I can't have it go down.

Do you think that this problem could resolve by itself when the next update becomes available?

If the problem is being produced by your server, as suggested by the articles I posted previously, there is nothing that a new release will correct. You will need to contact the host and inquire about a solution.

I did contact the hosting company Godaddy and they said that all is well from their side.

Is there anything specific I should ask them?

This is too getting too technical for me and I am afraid to do anything to bring the site down. This is my consulting site, so I can't take this risk.

Is there anybody here who is professional in these things and can assist me, of course, for pay?

Galaxyconsult If the are problems with serwer setting then next version will not resolve it. Please run http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=621&t=582860 and post at least PHP Configuration section (please de;e this file from server after genetating results).

Wojsmol: I checked with Godaddy which is my hosting company. They said that all is well with their servers.

The current PHP version used on my site is 5.6.

The script you are suggesting for me to run is too technical for me and I don't want to take a chance that my site can go down because if it does, I have nobody to help me.

If next update does not resolve this problem, I am going to have to pay someone who is technical and knows all sever, etc. details and can recover the site if it goes down.

Thank you for your help!

Hi Wojsmol:

Here is the information:

- memory limit - 64M

- max execution time - 120

If you have any insight into this, I would be grateful.

Thank you.

You miss this:
System >System information > System Information (tab):

for now I see one reason of the problems.

Yes, update automatically starts with the backup.

Godaddy tried to uodate the site but got an error from RokSprocket module installed 8n my site and the site went down. They had to restore the backup.

The developer who developed my site told me to never update this module and I never did and never had any problem updating Joomla. Update 3.8.1 is now available and I can't update it.

Before update to Joomla! 3.8.x you must update all extensions.

They lie about their servers all the time. They are one of the worst Hosts anyone could have.

The script might be technical but uploading it the website then copy/pasting the results isn't.

Joomla updates do not fix server errors.

If you followed jack rabies advice then you have probably caused more (as yet unseen) damage to your site. Before you do more damage see viewforum.php?f=177

GoDaddy is an excellent company. They do not lie about their servers. This is the best hosting company, in my opinion.

There are no server errors.

I followed jackrabbit advice - my site is updated and is running better than before.

I would like to thank jackrabbit for his knowledge and assistance. My site is now fully updated to 3.8.1 and working even better than before.

Begin of Rant: Well you must be unique. Did you search the forums for Godaddy? These are no lies as I can guarantee you based on experiences from hundreds of our clients with Godaddy. They all left this "host" Did you know that they ask for US$ 120 - US$ 140 for a site resteore (which they blowup normally since they are so 'excellent'. A while back they had to buy an excellent website to get rid of all the negative posts. The site was called "nodaddy.com" End of Rant

Galaxyconsult wrote:I never had to update all extensions to update Joomla so far.
It is mandatory to keep Joomla and extensions updated. We introduce all kinds of new stuff in preparation for Joomla 4.0 among others and extension developers are updating their extensions so they keep working and/or stay safe.

You are plain wrong here and you should keep Joomla and all extensions always up-to-date.

viewtopic.php?f=710&t=955318&p=3499295#p3495423 shows lack of knowledge by that poster. You never update a Joomla site anymore like this. You might think you have a correct site but your database will have tremendous problems (We introduced a lot of database updates in Joomla 3.8.0 and you cannot update those without using the installer so you also you have a lot of leftovers from J3.7.5. Thanks to that bad advise as Webdongle already mentioned

This is only your opinion. I am very happy with Godaddy.
There are no errors on my site and there was no bad advise. There was only very good advice.
Also, professionals should not be attacking other professionals. Just stop. I am happy with Go daddy and jackrabbit. I am not interested in further opinions.

In that case don't bother asking for help because when we reply we are not just replying to you. This forum is read by many users and we (Leo, myself and the other regular contributors) have a responsibility to those others users. That is why we point out the incorrect posts like those made by jackrabbit !

Galaxyconsult wrote:This is only your opinion....
No it is not only his opinion he has also stated facts. Also Leo has been associated with Joomla and servers long before jackrabies and yourself therefore his opinion is more valid and better informed.

Galaxyconsult wrote:... I am very happy with Godaddy.

That just highlights your inexperience and lack of knowledge

Galaxyconsult wrote:...

Now you contradict yourself because your first post indicates that there is a problem. And jackrabies has given you bad advice as attested to by myself and Leo who are both regular contributors to this forum and to the bugsquad (Leo also contributes regularly in other areas of Joomla).

Galaxyconsult wrote:... There was only very good advice.....
jackrabies advice was not good because it will break your site.

Galaxyconsult wrote:...

Professionals are not attacking professionals. Professionals (who regularly contribute to Joomla) are trying to prevent jackrabies from causing you (and other users) the problems caused by his bad advice.

Galaxyconsult wrote:... I am happy with Go daddy and jackrabbit.
Again that highlights your inexperience and lack of knowledge
