Updated from 3.7.5 to 3.8.0 Can't access backend

Postby Orchard » Wed Oct 04, 2017 6:55 pm

After updating from 3.7.5 to 3.8.0 I cannot access the Joomla Admin. Front end is working fine.
I did the "one click update".

Akeeba backup ran okay.
It appeared like the update ran fine.
But now I cannot access the backend of Joomla to do Admin work.

I Logged and got an error once.

------------
Not Found

The requested URL /administrator/index.php was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
...........

I used CPanel to verify that "index.php" is in that directory.
Since then, I just get a blank screen when I log into Admin.

Since I cannot access the Admin section, I cannot use Akeeba to restore my site back to 3.7.5.
AND
I cannot apply the update to Joomla 3.8.1 to fix the bug in the prior update.

Can't go back to restore Joomla.
Can't go forward to fix Joomla problem.
Can't do site maintenance.

What is the use of doing a backup if the Joomla update prevents me from accessing the Akeeba software so I can restore the site?

If the update was just "one click" why do I see recommendations to others that require jumping thru many hoops to troubleshoot and fix the problem?

Would I be better off just abandoning Joomla and all the work to troubleshoot the problem and fix it or go thru the agony :( of rebuilding my site from scratch with another package?

I have this problem too and am having to pay my server host to re-install a back-up version. I'm new to this so am hoping someone has pearls of wisdom to learn from.

Hi Orchard
If you have a backup made by Akeeba then yot can restore it without Joomla! admin access and this the prefered way in this case. See this reply on Akeeba support for details https://www.akeebabackup.com/support/ak ... ml#p159111.

I read the Akeeba backup reply by D. Brackin. My backup data is in the default location but I have a question or two. The instructions said

"Here's the bad part. Since it went sideways during a major upgrade, you have to manually delete all the files and drop the tables."

What is the difference between "deleting all the files" and "dropping the tables"? What tables? Where? What name(s)?
What happens if I just run "KICKSTART" without deleting and dropping?

You must delete all Joomla! files for this site and remove database related to this sie or create new databa in your hosting control panel and use this new database details during restore.

If you try restore Joomla! 3.7.5 over 3.0.x files then this will not work.

RESOLVED: Contacted the hosting company of my site. Explained the problem. Gave them Admin access to my Joomla site. They fixed the problem. Site now running Joomla 3.8.0.

I don't know when I will try updating again.

Hi Orchard
Please ask your hosting company what they did. In general issues like this occur on big updates like 3.7.x to 3.8.x

Hey wojsmol
I asked my hosting company what they found wrong and what they did to fix it. I got one sentence back.

"We have renamed .htaccess file to get this issue fixed."

That doesn't say much, but that is all they said.

Ok, we have a hint. Do you use any security extensions. Find renamed .htaccess on your FTP and check it content.
