Unable to publish menu items after upgrade

Postby Graemezee » Wed Dec 06, 2017 6:22 pm

https://issues.joomla.org/tracker/joomla-cms/15938
I have been living with this issue for some time now. I Have continued to Upgrade currently on 3.8.2

The Fix offered on this the link above does not work but I am able to go into phpMyAdmin find the menu items in the database and manually set the published to 1 the Query SELECT `published` FROM `#__menu` WHERE `alias` = 'root'; does not work.

Unfortunately, if I have to modify any of the existing affected menu items and any new menu items all fail to publish and I have to keep going into phpMyAdmin to publish them.

From the start of this website, I have had some strange goings on can only get menus to work if they are published in the main menu and have had to install sh404SEf to get control of the menus Something I have not had to do on much more complex sites.

Database Version 5.6.36
Database Collation latin1_general_ci
Database Connection Collation utf8mb4_general_ci
PHP Version 5.6.31
Web Server Apache
WebServer to PHP Interface apache2handler
Joomla! Version Joomla! 3.8.2 Stable
Joomla! Platform Version Joomla Platform 13.1.0 Stable

Can anyone suggest a way forward short of a fresh instal and manually copying the content and reconfiguring Joomla to match the original

Appreciate any help

There have been a number of forum topics relating to missing or unpublished menu items. Most of these topics discuss problems that people have had with their backend menus. Before going further, are we discussing backend or frontend menu items?

Yes, I agree, this is one of the solutions to the problems that I've read before on the forum.

Are we discussing a real or a hypothetical issue? Now that your existing menu items are all OK, have you created new menu items and you're discovering that these [new items] are missing/unpublished after you create them?

No this is a live site issue. I have published the existing menu item and all are working. I have created two new menu items for some new content, one was a duplicate of an existing menu item and one was completely new menu item.

The duplicate is automatically unpublished then I was unable to republish the item without the aid of phpMyAdmin. The other I tried a completely new menu item same problem in both cases. I had alteration to do the settings on the menu items and each time I save a published menu item it became unpublished. The only way to get it republished is in phpMyAdmin

I have tested a couple of other affected out of interest, making a change and saving the item seems to unpublish the item. This is only happening on menu items articles and modules just about everything else is working fine.

I vaguely remember reading other forum topics that reported these issues; I cannot recall whether those problems were resolved. As a general comment, however, this problem doesn't affect everyone (in fact, it probably only affects a miniscule proportion of people who operate J! 3.8 websites) but there's a consistent body of thought that suggests the problem "began" with an incomplete or half-complete former installation of Joomla earlier.

What we don't know, for instance, was how the website came into being in the first place and how the update procedure was undertaken. There's one standard installation procedure but many people run into problems when they use some "alternative" procedure. Likewise, there's one standard update procedure and, again, people run into countless problems when they try to do this another way.

My recommendation, for what it's worth, is to use the Forum Post Assistant tool. Without having the kind of information that this tool provides, we're making blind guesses. :)

Hi Graemezee
Please run this query in phpmyadmin

Code: Select all

SELECT `published` FROM `#__menu` WHERE `alias` = 'root';

replace #__ with value of $dbprefix from configuration.php file.

Hi Graemezee
Please run this query in phpmyadmin

Hi wojsmol I had Posted in my original post the link to the To that page with that solution I had tried your solution several times with no joy. I had the same results as YvVz Basically nothing happened. I did note that I could edit the individual Items from within PHPMyAdmin switching the published 0 to a 1

At present all the items are published because I manually published them in phpmyadmin. Happy to run again But assume I would need to Save a published menu item to make it unpublish first. I can solve the symptom ie get an item to publish via PHPMyAdmin. I am looking to stop the issue from reoccurring i.e. Stop the Menu items automatically unpublishing on save.

Thank you for your FPA report. There are a few things that disturb me (or should I say that come as surprisese to me) about this report.

Evidently there is an issue with the database. There would appear to be a historical connection in the maintenance of the website where (as I indicated earlier) the site began with a much older version of Joomla and, over time, one or more updates were only partly completed resulting in the range of problems that we now see. First things first: I would suggest that you change from latin1_swedish_ci (character set: latin1) to utf8_general_ci (character set: utf8mb4). I would also run the Extensions » Manage » Database » Fix procedure.

There is also an issue with the security of your website: please review the file ownership, folder/file permissions as recommended in https://docs.joomla.org/What_are_the_re ... issions%3F

You have a number of extensions that are not up-to-date and may be incompatible with J! 3.8.2. For example JXTC 1.3.0, System - Google Analytics Free 4.1, Forte 1.0.2 template from JXTC. I would also be a little concerned about the extension DirectPHP 3.0 that doesn't appear to have been updated for nearly three years.

I hope there's some food for thought and reflection here.

Thank You For Your Help. I will follow your instructions and see where it takes me. The template is up to date i just change the relevant files There are a few things I need to remove that I no longer use and permissions issue is something I will lock down once I have resolved the problem.

At first, you have a little mess in you menu table.

If root is published then the first step is done.

Next steps:
1. Make a backup of menu table.
2. Rebuild menu, there is a button in backend to Rebuild menu in menu list. Use it.
3. Check if that help, probably not yet.
4. Edit the top menu items (which are unpublished) and change for them parent to root and save.
5. Check again, now it may work if not rebuild menu again and check.

You can check if you still have an issue by query:

Code: Select all

SELECT * FROM #__menu WHERE parent_id < 1

The valid result should return only one row with `alias` column equals to root. If you find more then go to joomla backend and edit/save each one. This should fix all problems.

Technical info:

- column `parent_id` should be greater than 0 for all menu items except root item - after save top level menu item issue should be fixed for all child items.

- incorrect `lft`, `rgt` or `level` columns - button rebuild should fix it.

csthomas have Just Followed your instructions

Code: Select all

SELECT * FROM #__menu WHERE parent_id < 1

It Found an unpublished menu item That I would not have been able to tell this was a parent item, it was classed as a single article item with no child items.

Publishing the item resolved the problem I have been having i can now save and create an article. I don't want this item published, can I delete the item or does it have to stay published.

Appreciate your help on this one

Unpublish the item and check what will happen. If others remain published (after saving again), you can delete the item.
