After upgrade from 3.7.0 to 3.7.1 front end user is not redirected to login screen

Post by helenchappell » Thu Feb 07, 2019 10:29 am

Hi,

I have inherited a Joomla site and am in the process of trying to upgrade Joomla.
I've got to 3.7.0 and all appears to work. But when I upgrade to 3.7.1 using the patch upgrade I get the following problem:

User who hasn't logged in tries to access page for registered user, but is not redirected to login screen.

I'm wondering whether to use ACL Manager to try and fix it. Also I am sure we have extensions which need updating.

I would very much appreciate some advice on where to start, or if there is anything obvious to try!

fpa output is below

Many thanks,
Helen

Note site now back to 3.7.0.
Suspect some extension has not updated but not experienced enough to know which this could be.
Considering updating template.

Re: After upgrade from 3.7.0 to 3.7.1 front end user is not redirected to login screen

The FPA comments ("Actions to Resolve...") at top of the report says you returned the site to 3.7.0, but the FPA indicates the Joomla version is 3.8.1 so I'm confused over what version you're really using (or you think that you're using. ???

Do you mean the administrator side, or front-end? Do you have a login module on your front-end pages - has it been set in the module assignment options to appear on the pages you want it?

You're saying that a user from front end is seeing "registered" content, but never logged on to to the front-end? Is the user a registered type user or higher e.g. admin or super user?

One thing that could show this behaviour (and is by design) is shared sessions - in that a logged in Super User can view the front-end without having to log in again as a suitable front-end user - the session in the back end allows immediate access to the front-end

I don't know when shared sessions was introduced as a feature (certainly not on the 3.7 series, and possibly not the early 3.8 series).

Otherwise, perhpas there's something else at work that keeps a user permanently logged in, or the content they believe is restricted is actually "guest" or "public"

Also you need to fix those elevated file permissions (775) back to 755.

PHP API: apache2handler ... should be cgi
Folders should be 755, Files 644 (configuration.php 444)

It looks like you have been updating incorrectly.
Fix the above and then.
Please try updating using Components >>> Joomla update.

Re: After upgrade from 3.7.0 to 3.7.1 front end user is not redirected to login screen

Thanks for the responses.

System info tells me 3.7.0.
I first tried upgrading to 3.8.1 (getting the same problem) but rolled back (I thought).
I have been upgrading from the Upload & Update tab in Components>>Joomla Upgrade. I used this for the 3.7.0-3.7.1 patch and then got the problem, described further below.
Then in the same place I reapplied the 3.7.0 upgrade, which appears to have worked, in that the site operates as before, without the issue.

This is happening on the front end. What I have is a login menu item on a hidden menu. When the 'registered page' menu item is chosen the login page appears for the user to login and once they have logged in (or registered) they get onto the page they wanted. A bit of added complexity is that the page is an alias for our biodiversity component. A second page works in the same way. The login form is not otherwise visible/accessible on the site. So this works on 3.7.0, if that is what I have, but not on 3.7.1.

I noticed this during health checking, so the user was me and it is very possible I was logged in to the back end at the same time. I will repeat and check whether logging out of the back end makes a difference. Will also sort file permissions and update with results.

Thanks again,
Helen

Do you have more than one website hosted on the server? If you have more than one website, are the website file systems "nested" (i.e. there is one or more websites located in sub-folders of another website)?

How did you "roll back" the upgrade? Specifically, what process or procedure did you use to "roll back" the J! update?

And how did you think you did that? The chances are that you broke your site. You may need to rebuild the core files. But First fix your folder/file permissions and the PHP API:

Many thanks for taking the time to help.

I rolled back by reverting to snapshot of server and dataserver (taken in AWS prior to upgrade).
Just one website hosted on the server. I can only find one version.php. I can find a schemas table which appears to suggest version 3.8 for extension_id 700 however. Is the database out of step?

Currently waiting for a maintenance window to backup and fix folder/file permissions plus php issue.

Then retry the upgrade. (Would it be wisest to try to upgrade to 3.8.1?)

If no joy, then try replacing core files as discussed here: viewtopic.php?t=921505

I'll be honest with you and I won't dance around the bush. This looks like a sizeable repair job (one that will require dedicated and sustained effort over more than a day, depending on your skills). It may be possible—nothing is impossible, but the answer becomes immediately recognisable as soon as you place a dollar sign in front of the options—to repair the website but it doesn't look easy.

I think it's fair to conclude that you're in this situation because whoever was "responsible" in the past for maintaining the website was not carrying out their maintenance duties. With J! itself outdated, many J! extensions not up to spec., folder and file permissions that are not recommended and PHP in a right royal state of confusion, this isn't a quick-fix.

This is a self-help forum but it's not a full-on we-can-fix-everything-few-quick-tips kind of thing. The website problems require someone who knows their way around the server environment along with knowledge of the intentions of the original website developer who put things together in the first place. I may be able to give you some ideas but I don't think that I (or anyone else) can necessarily summarise everything with a few dot points.

Depending on your proficiency with spoken English, we may be able to begin the reconstruction journey by spending a little bit of time—and time is the most precious commodity—videoconferencing a forward parth. If that idea appeals to you, you may contact me via email or PM (whichever works) and we'll see what we can arrange. Back to you. 8)

Replacing the files is a relatively simple operation. It all hangs on the state of the database. Best done on localhost.
*Install Joomla of the same version that fits the database
*Install the 3rd party extensions to the new Joomla
You now have fresh Joomla and 3rd party files
*Create a database and import the original database
*Edit the configuration.php to connect the original database.
That should restore your site.

If successful then use Akeeba to make a backup before you attempt an update. Your main problem is that your server is misconfigured thus perform the rebuild on localhost.

I agree with @Webdongle. That's the gist of the solution. Also, using a PC-based server, may be the way to work through the problems(plural), assuming:

1) The PC-hosted webserver is setup more-or-less identically to the target environment, i.e. the same webserver software (e.g. Apache), the same database engine, (e.g. MySQL), the same version of PHP is used.

2) The same mechanism is used to transfer the website filesystem and database tables.

3) You can do this by yourself because a PC-hosted problem-solving approach means that you're effectively on your own and different PC-hosting packages (e.g. XAMPP, WAMP, LAMP, etc) have their own idiosyncracies.

Finally, assuming that you might be able to remediate the raft of problems using some Apache-MySQL-PHP stack loaded on your PC, the solution may not necessarily translate when the remediated website is transferred back to the original host server.

OK thanks both.

Akeeba I haven't used before but I can see it is a must-have.

Would the final step of the plan be to move the new working site onto my server using Akeeba?

I actually have a test version of my site which is much more recent and working, version 3.9. So could I use that instead of creating a completely new one?

Can I then migrate the users by exporting the user tables data and then importing into the target site?

Yes Akeeba can be used to move sites https://docs.joomla.org/Copying_a_Joomla_website#Akeeba . But make sure you keep the database safe.

I suggest Wanmp for localhost on windows

Just wanted to say thanks again for your help with this. I got a working version of 3.8.1 going with the copied database so I guess that is a good sign the db is ok. My first attempt to copy the working version failed (similar problem) but Akeeba worked nicely to restore the site. The site is on AWS so current plan is to mimic what I just did to get my test site working (create new instance/installation on AWS, use the existing database) and then move the site over to the new instance.
Really appreciate your help getting a bit further up the learning curve.
