[Application Instantiation Error: Failed to start the session] Migration issue

Post by Darbo » Thu Aug 22, 2019 12:18 am

Hello everyone and thank you for the time you are spending on my post.

My friend paid a webmaster for his website, now his contract is done and the webmaster sent him the website in .zip + the .sql.sql file with a dead domain :-\ :-\ :-\

Now that the website is done, I thought I could do the transfer (I only code in Java so it's not that easy to get into it) for him but here is the problem. His webmaster doesn't reply so I don't know on which version of Joomla he was on ??? ??? ??? .

So I took a PhP 7.2 and the last Joomla's update. I transfered all the files in the FTP , I created a new data base in UTF 8 general as I saw on the internet ( I followed this Joomla's article to do what I did: Copying a Joomla) and put the old date base into it. I changed all the settings in the "configuration.php" and from the beginning until now I stay with this error:

Error displaying the error page: Application Instantiation Error: Failed to start the session

Possible error: -It was written "localhost" for the data host but with "OVH" I have the host name so I tried the two version (localhost and mysql.db )

- I also tried both SQL versions (mysqli and mysql) not working too so I let what was initialy there: "mysqli". (Information I'm with MYSQL v.5.6)

Final review: It doesn't look like an easy copy-paste to transfer a website, like I thought .... but it's interesting for sure 8) .

- not use localhost, please check the host of database, maybe it is other url: public $host =""
- check real path of tmp and log folder in server

also check "Grant all the privileges on the database"...... you have user for db, but not set grant edit, add, delete for your db.

Thank you for your answer harperlala.

I put the host of database provided by OVH on the configuration.
I also changed the path of tmp and log which was way shorter than what was written.

At this step: still the same error.

"also check "Grant all the privileges on the database"". I went to my phpMyadmin and I couldn't find this step.

The fact is my error doesn't change. I can't even log on my Joomla's admin page.

This is a copy of my configuration.php (without personnal informations of course):

That config file is from a Joomla 2.5 site, which is EOL since 2014. When was this built? Using php 7.2 will not work.
