2.5.28 Joomla Update failing on http update site url

Hi,

Trying to migrate my 2.5.28 install to 3++ (before migrating further to 4.2).
I have been looking at many many upgrade guides but I always falls back to the point where I am supposed to disable the remember me extension, clear my extension cache, go to the Joomla Update component, select STS and click on the magic button.
Unfortunately, the magic button never appears and errors keep telling me the updater cannot connect to [i]http://update.joomla.org/core/sts/list_sts.xml[/i]
I have tried changing [b]http[/b] to [b]https[/b] in the db_update_sites table but for some reason it keeps coming back to [b]http[/b].

Any chance to get the 2.5.28 Joomla Updater working ?
Or, if not, any way to migrate manually ?

There's multiple issues with this ---- PHP 5.4 is many years beyond EOL and so is PHP 5.6 if you were able to update to that. You might be lucky to find a webhost still using those versions (but that's not a good thing).

You've not seen this Practical Guide to Migrating Joomla 2.5 to 3.x?
viewtopic.php?f=710&t=793171 (the first sticky post in the forum).

You may need to update manually. The J3.x versions are here:
https://downloads.joomla.org/cms/joomla3. I think in early J3, updates could still be done through the extension manager. That changed after Joomla 3.5 I think and the Joomla Update function was introduced (or the extension manager method was removed, I forget which).

The other think to watch out for as mentioned in Leo's Practical Guide, is extension compatibility. I doubt you will find extensions for 2.5 or early 3.x these days.
