Updating old Joomla 3.3.1 installation to 3.10.11

Hello everyone,
I am trying to update an old website built on Joomla 3.3.1 to version 3.10.11.
I am not a great expert, the first thing I tried to do is go to the administration panel / components / Joomla update. There it tells me "You already have the latest version of Joomla!, 3.3.1."
How can I overcome this? Is there a way to "manually" install the update package? I have downloaded "Joomla_3.10.11-Stable-Update_Package.zip" but how should I proceed?
When I purge the cache before trying to update it gives me this error. I believe it indicates that it is unable to connect to the Joomla site to find updates, but I don't know the reason. Any idea?

Did take you 10 years to detect that the Updater is not working?

Download 3.4.8 and install as an extension. This is the last version you can do that with.

Newer versions of the Updater have a Upload and Updste Tab.

Please post your FPA (See Red Frame above) so we can find out why your server cannot reach the updates.

Do you have extensions that are not updates also?

@maremax: We have discussed this before.

Here is the solution:

1) You need PHP 5.6 to update to J! 3.x. If you do not have access to PHP 5.6 you cannot update J! 3.x versions before J! 3.6. Make sure upload_max_filesize = 64M and post_max_size = 128M.
2) Download the J! 3.4.8 installation package to your PC. Do not use the J! 3.4.7 package suggested by @Per.
3) Use the Extension Manager » Upload Package File and enter the location of the J! 3.4.8 installation in the text box.
4) Click Install. You will be logged out when the installation is completed.
5) Login to the backend again. Go to Extensions » Manage » Update.
6) Click Clear Cache (top left of screen)
7) Now you can go to Components » Joomla! Update and you will see that J! 3.6.5 is the next available version.
8) Update to J! 3.6.5.
9) Then go to Components » Joomla! Update again, click Clear Cache (top left of screen), and you should see that J! 3.10.11 is the next available version.
10) Update to J! 3.10.11.
11) You can now use PHP 7.x if you want.

Hello and thank you both for the detailed instructions. I am trying a bit but I am running into a server issue when trying to upload the upgrade package as an extension (white error page). I have "inherited" this site that I'm now asked to update, that's why it's so outdated and I wonder if it will be possible to update it while keeping all the data. I will write you tomorrow with more details. Meanwhile thank you again for your help, it's very appreciated.

Sorry for the delay, let me catch you up on what's going on. It looks like even though there was a white page during the attempt to update to version 3.4.8, the update still went through. Now Joomla says the current version is 3.4.8. I tried following your steps for the next update to 3.6.5 (clearing cache etc.), but Joomla says there's no more updates and that 3.4.8 is the latest. It seems like Joomla can't update automatically no matter what.
Just like Per suggested, I ran the FPA and will post the results in the next message (leaving out some sensitive info). From what I can see, there's a few problems...
Thanks for any further help you can give me on how to move forward with the updates.

I don't know how you fix the "more than one instance of version.php found" matter, sorry. This could be a cause of problems.

Did you go to Extensions » Manage » Update Sites and rebuild the list of update sites before you tried to use the Joomla! Update component to see if there were new versions of J! available?

I do not have any J! 3.4.8 websites (sorry) to confirm whether the Rebuild button should be there or not. Remember that J! 3.4.8 was released a long time ago (on 24-Dec-2015) and I don't keep sites with these old and outdated versions of J!.
