Menu item won't work after upgrade to 3.8.8

Hi folks. I finally managed to upgrade my happy amateur site from 3.6.4 to 3.8.8. Thx to all pros who helped me through this!

Anyway, after the upgrade the menu items to my home made component quit working! When I select them I simply get the error message

0 - syntax error, unexpected '&'

and that's it. I know that they were functioning before the upgrade.

The component is one I've hammered out myself, just for fun, as a pet project. I've built it up in the corresponding directories over the years, so there's no fancy installation file, or somesuch...

I know that this is awfully little to go by, and that the problem probably lies in the code somewhere. But, I just have to ask if there's some fundamental difference in the menu items/definitions/whatever in 3.8.8 compared to 3.6.4, that I should zoom in on.

After some searching I've narrowed down the problem to the call

$controller = JControllerLegacy::getInstance($view);

This one ends with the error message I described. As I've said before, the component worked with the former Joomla-version, but now there's some oddities around. I might add that the error occurs regardless of the (valid) value of $view. Any thoughts on that?
