This too: viewtopic.php?f=710&t=925100

It doesn't seem possible to avoid using a migration plugin of some sort. Both the above and @webdongles suggestion mention third-party tools because 1.5.x to 3.x is a complex migration and not straight-forward.

@Webdongle: thanks for this link! :) This probably means that someone could take a J! 1.5 website (hosted anywhere in the world) and, if they had administrator access to it, the could install the J! 1.5 pre-migration elements on it. After doing that, someone else could create an up-to-date J! 3.x website, install the necessary J2XML elements there, and migrate the J! 1.5 site content to J! 3.x.

Doing it this way means that the original site could be running on PHP 5 and the target J! 3.x [migrated] site could be running PHP 7 (with the sites running on different servers—connected only via the internet) without the need to co-locate the sites on the same server.

Of course, I would never attempt to modify the database schema "by hand" (I just don't have enough hours in the day to attempt to do this) and it makes good sense to use a scripted/packaged approach to accomplish the task. I agree with @AMurray in that I haven't seen anyone attempt to write how to do this kind of job "by hand" and a packaged solution seems to be the best solution.

Some packaged solutions may cost a few dollars (in the grand scheme of things, the cost is minimal) while there may be solutions available free-of-charge. The real cost is how many hours (or days) one is prepared to expend in making the migration.

One caveat ... j2xml hasn't been updated for a while so not sure how well it works. Another possibility is to copy/paste (via notepad++) but that is not good for large sites.
