Menu links stopped working after update to 3.9.2

I just updated from 3.9.1 to 3.9.2 and none of the menu links work. I keep getting a 404 error. I copied and pasted the link from the menu

Did you create a backup before updating?
Before trying to solve the issue, make sure you have a backup (eg using Akeeba Backup)

I would test with:
1. SEF OFF (Global Configuration > Search Engine Friendly URLs: OFF)
2. SEF ON + Use URL Rewriting OFF
3. Check if you have a .htaccess file in the root of your site, and compare it with an original Joomla .htaccess (htaccess.txt)
4. Content > Articles > Options ( button on the far upper right) > "Integration" tab > what does "URL Routing" say? Legacy or Modern?
If "Modern" > what does "Remove IDs from URLs" say? Yes/No?
Test with different settings

Furthermore:
Which 3rd party extensions are you using? Plugins, Menu Modules, Template etc?
Use "Forum Post Assistant" to give more information about your set-up:

I tried both SEF OFF and SEF ON but there was no change.
I tried both Legacy and Modern (all options) integration and no change.

There seems to be a problem with the install. I tried to create a new menu item (Blog Category) and receive an error when I try to select a category. I am running a relatively basic site with a Gavick template.

Your version of AllVideos is outdated. Please make sure that all extensions used in J! are up-to-date and compatible with PHP 7.

I uninstalled AllVideos since I don't use it and still have the same problem.

I uninstalled FoxContact also. Still having the same problem. I also reinstalled the 3.9.2 patch file after I uninstalled these 2 extensions and still no change.

Your versions of JCE Editor and Joocial are also outdated ... and there are other outdated extensions on this website. Please make sure that all extensions used in J! are up-to-date and compatible with PHP 7. It's not our job to find these things for you: it's your job.

Did anything else change with the update from Joomla 3.9.1 to 3.9.2?
Did your host change the PHP from 5.6 to 7.1?

Is it possible to switch back to PHP 5.6?
Just to test if your issue is related with the PHP version?

I made no site changes but the host was upgraded from 5.6 to 7.1

Notice that the category is blank. Prior to the upgrade the Category was "Blog"
I get the following error when I select Category

I am able to create a new Blog menu option and select the category without an error but still get a 404 error when I pick it from the menu on the front ent.

Enable J! debug mode and set Error Reporting Level = Maximum.

If you don't know how to do that, see http://google.com/search?q=Joomla+debug+mode+ ... %20Maximum

The "404 error" on the frontend happens because the menu item is not properly created (in other words, it doesn't exist as far as the frontend is concerned) on the backend. Do you understand? Something is preventing the menu item from being created properly on the backend.

I get the debug console on the home page but not on the pages where I am getting the 404 errors.

The errors (the ones relating to "checkout failed") may be logged in either the file error_log or ../administrator/logs/error.php or in both places (for different reasons).

I may have given you misinformation and I apologise if I did. Errors, if logged by J!, normally appear in the file /error_log. Other PHP errors may be logged elsewhere but it depends on how you've organised your web server where they go.

It may also be an idea to go to Extensions » Manage » Discover, click the Discover button (top left), select the checkboxes next to any items that it finds, and then click the Install button. After doing that, please run the Forum Post Assistant report again and post the results here (like you did last time).

The Quick Logout extension has not been updated for over four years. Recommend that you uninstall it or contact the extension author for an updated replacement. PHP 7 did not exist four years ago.

Suggest that you change the Session Handler setting in Global Configuration, from "Database" to "PHP".

Recommend that you change the folder permissions for the folders ../gimail, ../media/dojo and ../media/dojo/20141014 to the recommended settings (see https://docs.joomla.org/How_do_UNIX_fil ... ns_work%3F)

The FPA report shows that you still have an outdated version of Fox Contact installed. You have other extensions that are outdated (e.g. Easy File Uploader).

Please uninstall the J! 2.5 administrator template bluestork; J! 2.5 extensions will not work with J! 3.x and, almost certainly, will not work with PHP 7.

I uninstalled Quick Logout, Fox Contact, and bluestork. I changed Session Handler to PHP and corrected permissions.

The problem seems to associated with Blog and Categories. I have 19 categories but when I select "Category Blog" there are no categories to select. Also the "Link" has "id=42" but the Blog ID is 79.

As we have discovered, there is evidence of several problems (several of which may be related to the matters we're discussing) that need to be attended to. These problems appear to be the result of neglecting to maintain the website.

One of the first observations made in this discussion was by @Pe7er:

Did you create a backup before updating? Before trying to solve the issue, make sure you have a backup (eg using Akeeba Backup)

It may be a good idea to install Akeeba Backup and, while you're about it, install Akeeba Admin Tools. They're both free-of-charge to download.

I also wonder when was the last time you ran Extensions » Update and what would a screenshot tell us about what happens when you run it?

The database may be in a state of disrepair. Have you tried running Extensions » Database » Fix What happens when you do that?

Unfortunately I did not do a backup I have been using Joomla for many years and have never had problems with upgrades. I won't make that mistake again...

Advise that you should now install Akeeba Backup (and make a backup of your website); all websites should be regularly backed up and maintained at frequent intervals.

The next thing I would do is to open the Akeeba Admin Tools component and click each of the items that I've circled in the attached screenshot. In my experience, clicking these built-in tools does not cause problems but, because you have a backup of your website, you can always revert to the backup that you've made with Akeeba Backup.
