I keep trying to upgrade to the latest Joomla from the last recent version but i keep getting hit with ERROR: AJAX Loading Error people have told me to go into configuration and change the max execution time, there's no max execution time option inside my configuration.php file to change : /

That setting is not in Joomla, but in the php.ini file of your server.

I wonder who were the "people" who told you to do that? @Per is right: Max. Execution Time is a PHP setting.

There may be other environmental factors that cause the error(s) you're having.

You may be interested in using the Forum Post Assistant diagnostic tool and posting the information generated by that tool here, on this forum. Have you considered doing that?

well i can't find my php.ini file neither and i don't want to install all this diagnostic software for a common issue, and if its isn't a common issue i don't see how, i'm a new bluehost user who installed Joomla, i don't think i'm in the minority to be diagnostic checking it for everyone else as guinea pig.

The FPA tool will help us help you solve the problem. It's not something you install. It's one file, you upload to your server (into the folder containing JOomla) and run the script. it will take you through the steps to generate a report, and the output report will be formatted for this forum.

The diagnostic tool does not identify personal information - only technical information about your joomla install and the hosting environment.

The script will delete itself within a few days after use.

If you can't locate a php.ini file in the root folder of your hosting (or in the folder joomla installed, then please check with your web host about changing such settings).

It might be something you cannot change yourself, and the web host will need to do so. Ask them to change the setting max_execution_time and set it to say 60 or 120.

alright there's my fpa report and bluehost have changed the control panel since the update of html5, bluehosts cpanel looks all different now and the PHP Config tool is gone so i can't use it cause its no longer there

noboss module is also present i made some complaints about this module on the joomla forums i can't get rid of it no matter what i try

btw:- while we're on the subject of diagnostic, the only error i can see is with my module mod_raxo_allmode_k2 - i have been having some issues with it and cant figure out what it is, is it related to my php config problem you reckon?

It has nothing to do with the increase execution time, it won't start the process for it to pass any time slot, it immediately rejects my update with the ERROR: AJAX Loading Error

Looking at similar problems the solutions were correcting Permissions and increasing maximum execution time. No harm in trying that.

All folders but I doubt 775 instead of 755 is the problem

It might not then again it might. At this point it is worth a try. You could use Akeeba backup to port the site to localhost. Wamp for windows mamp for mac. If it updates on localhost then you know it is a server problem. If not then you have a copy to work on so you don't break your site.

Is there a firewall on your server? The fact that filezilla crashes when you change the folder permissions suggests some security on your server is preventing some folders/files from being altered.

Try increasing max execution time. fpa on your site is still showing 30.

You now have options to look at. Try them rather than trying to second guess them might be a good way to proceed.

Yeah i contacted bluehost customer support it did indeed to be the case with the file permission issue, filezilla still crashes trying to change the permissions and the bluehost cpanel was confusing as it was the complicated way to change permission through their own cumbersome awkward cpanel seemed to do the trick. After i changed it all i was able to update Joomla, hopefully now my modules that were providing me hassle will ease on me now : /

I use a VPN and in my hosting account security section, there is a list of white-listed IP addresses. I always make sure to add whatever the current IP address is on the VPN to the list. That way, when I update Joomla, there are no AJAX loading error alerts.
