Pre-Update check never finishes - update impossible Topic is solved

One of my sites experiences the following problems while trying to update from 3.10.0 to 3.10.1.

On Chrome the pre-update check seems to run alright. However - the update cannot be done there (because my antivirus does not allow that).

So I routinely use IE for updates, usually with no problems.
Now I am asked to be patient while the pre-update checks are run on my extensions. However, it never finishes, not in ten minutes, not in hours.
Under Failed/Unavailable/UppdateRequired no extensions get listed.

So I proceed to the "Live Update" Tab, where I am warned that the pre-update check is in progress, so
I check the box "Do you wish to ignore the warnings about potentially incompatible plugins and to proceed with the upgrade?".

BUT the " Install the Update " -button stays dimmed and performs nothing.

My guess is that "something" prevents the pre-update check to run (to the end?).
And since it never finishes there is "no bad pre-update check" to override,
therefore I cannot install 3.10.1.

So, how should I proceed? Any suggestions asre most welcome.

Hmm, Then I will have to clean them from the AntiVirus first.
But I.E. has worked fine up to now (even on my other site where I could ignore the warnings and update).

You're going to have to bite the bullet at some point...

Firefox is open source, standards-compliant and actively maintained.

A couple of observations:

1) Internet Explorer has been unsupported for ages.

2) I realise we're discussing updating from one version of J! 3.10 to another version of J! 3.10 and, for the present time, IE is listed as a browser that works with J! 3.x. There's a lot of things that are supposed to work with J! 3.x: theoretically you should be able to use PHP 5.3.10. IE won't work with J! 4.

3) I don't know anything about the possible impact that "anti-virus software" may have on the ability to use the Joomla! Update component in J! 3.10.0 (i.e. why the screen goes "dim" and nothing seems to happen.

It's not the screen that goes dim. It's the update button that stays dimmed.
Ok, IE (without any antivirus add-ons) has worked fine for me up until 3.10.0. But no more.

So now I deactivated the antivirus on FF and tried again. No luck at all.
After the update is started FF complains that the "connection was reset (http://www.mysite.com/administrator/ind ... bfed6cfc=1 )

No problem. I'll demote IE.

It's just an old habit, as long as it worked.

However, I switched to FF and deactivated the AntiVirus add-on.

But it still won't do the update. Now the "connection is reset" pretty immediately.

Most of my extensions are "Update info not available" (Mostly standard extensions for Kunena and Phoca Gallery + JCE and Captcha - CB AntiSpam).

So, IE might have been a problem, but so far FF is not the solution.

Ok,
when update failed last time, several years ago, I switched to IE (because it had no AntiVirus add-on).
The updates worked flawlessly after that up until I tried to update to 3.10.1
Now I switched to FF (after I removed the AntiVirus add-on), and tried the live update.
Then I tested with FF again, after having paused the AntiVirus protection alltogether.
Same result: "Connection reset" (although it seems more like a "connection timeout")
(Oddly enough I did manage to update a sister site, very similar to the one not updating now.)

So, why is this happening and how should I continue?
Any suggestions are most welcome.

I googled the results for ERR_CONNECTION_RESET.

The error, which usually comes with the 101 code, is particularly common on Chrome (Google’s browser), but Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc. also display similar error messages such as “The connection was reset” which indicate a connection problem. In contrast to HTTP error messages, for example, the “ERR_CONNECTION_RESET” message does not directly indicate whether the problem is caused by the client, the server, or the network.

They're sometimes difficult to diagnose; sometimes they can simply be the result of pulling the cable from the wall. When upgrading from one version of J! to another using the Joomla! Update component, you need to have a reliable internet connection. It can be that simple.

One of the most common reasons for the “ERR_CONNECTION_RESET” error is that a proxy server has been defined in the internet settings and this is blocking the connection setup. This can be entered automatically by plugins or add-ons that you have added to your browser. The simple solution in this case is to inspect the proxy settings and deactivate proxy access if necessary.

Additionally, if you have any plugins or add-ons added to your browser, you should deactivate (or uninstall) them. I have not had this kind of error when updating J! software.

Yes, I agree that it is AS IF my computer is not connected to the internet,
BUT only when I try to update Joomla. Updating Joomla add-ons has never presented any problems.
So no, I do not believe that it is that simple.

I have never used a proxy server in my network and as far as I can see, no proxy server has ever been defined.

I am using FF, solely for the specific purpose of updating Joomla sites. I run a clean FF with no fancy add-ons or plug-ins. (As I used to run IE before).

I have no problems whatsoever updating components or add-ons on my Joomla sites. It is ONLY the Joolma update itself that presents this problem.

I just noted that only one site DOES perform the pre-update check, the other one goes directly into Live Update. (Why is that?)
However, both sites experience the same "connection reset" while trying to update Joomla (but NOT any other software on the site). Can that be a clue?

So, I am still stuck...
Any ideas are most welcome.

The update check is only showing when updating to 4.0.

If the site is originated from before 3.4, the updater may show the update to 4.0 even if it's on the Default channel.

This procedure will correct it:

Select options in the update component.

1) Select another update channel (Next Joomla or test)
2) Save
3) Select back to the Default channel again
4) Save & Close
5) Clear cache and the correct to update to 3.10.3 will show

I tended to some other matters for some hours.
Then retried the update - SUCCESS.
