Install fresh 3.x in new directory and migrate DB?

Hello,

I need to upgrade an old 1.5.x server to 3.10.11 (that's what my ISP offers; The site also runs phpBB for the forum.)

To keep it safe, I'd like to…
1. Install 3.10.11 in a separate directory and database (after exporting the database)
2. Once installed, run some tool to convert the database

Can this be done with just a Plesk/FTP access, ie. no SSH?

J2XML is good for migrating users and articles.

On the developer's website you also find the J1.5 version.
