Language Tag

Post by sokrates_mx5 » Sun Nov 29, 2020 7:53 pm

I'm running a multilingual website. The present Language Tag is en-GB. Since the English version is not country specific, then it would make more sense to change it to en. What impact will a change of the Language Tag from en-GB to en have on the website?

Since the English version is not country specific
What style of English do you use in your English text?
Do you write for example "center" or "centre"? :-)

The primary language subtag "en" is the most important.

I don't think that changing "en-GB" to "en" will have much impact for your site's SEO. According to this article Google Ignores HTML Lang Attribute for Indexing in Search Results: http://www.thesempost.com/google-ignore ... h-results/

More info about language tags:

PS: I have various multilingual websites that are not country specific. However, I try to use en-GB English spelling (just my personal preference) in my articles and the English pages have the href "en-GB".

You can easily change the tag to "en" by using the System - Language Code plugin.

Thanks for your replies.

I try to use British English in the English version of the "core" of the web site, but the English used in the articles might vary, depending on the author. The English version is the "international version" for those that do not speak Spanish.

The reason why I started to look in to this issue, is my swap to JL-sitempas that adds hreflang. It adds en-GB as x-default, which generate a warning on validation since it's country specific.

I'll change the Language Tag from en-GB to en meanwhile I keep es-ES for the Spanish language version to see how it will work.

It didn't work. I received the following error message when trying to change the Language Tag from en-GB to en:
Error
Save failed with the following error:
The Language Tag should have 2 or 3 lowercase letters corresponding to the ISO language, a dash and 2 uppercase letters corresponding to the ISO country code.
This should be the exact prefix used for the language installed or to be installed. Example: en-GB, srp-ME.

I have explained above: Use the System - Language Code plugin... Never change the language tag in the Content Languages manager.

Thanks, I'm sorry for not reading you earlier post more carefully.

I've now changed the en-GB Language Code in the Plugin to en. In <html> the lang is now en, but it didn't have any impact on the sitemap generated by JL-sitemap. The sitemap is still en-GB, so I assume it takes the Language Tag code from the Content Language.
