Translated category names for joomla articles

Post by sseguin » Wed Aug 02, 2017 1:43 pm

Hello, I have a multilingual site, with English and French.

All of our articles are placed in categories that have language set to ALL. The articles are set to ALL for language as well.

However, some of the category names are long, and we would like to display the category selectors on the front end.

Currently the categories are only named in English as they are not visible. How can we have it display a French name when people are visiting through the French URLS and the English name when visiting through the English URLS.

In other words, one category has an English name and a French name, and only the appropriate name of the language currently being browsed is displayed.

Is this at all possible? Or is the only choice to have the English / French name as one, and not separate?

Thank you.

It is pretty unusual to tag to ALL languages all categories and articles on a multilingual site.

What do you mean by "we would like to display the category selectors on the front end" ?
Specific menu items? For each category or for a list of categories?

Whatever, giving 2 names to a category is not possible using basic Core. One would need to hack a lot, rename the category as a lang string constant and then creating a language string per category and language.

Hi, we would like to display the list of categories and anywhere the category name shows up.

Most of our articles are set to ALL for languages as they are bilingual but we would like the category name to be different based on the language being browsed, rather than copy all the articles to a separate category.

As I wrote, that is not possible without extensive hacking.
