Duplicate content - canonical

Post by MediaFish » Tue Jul 11, 2017 10:42 am

Hi,

On our website http://www.endeavour-sailing.co.uk we added .html suffixes at the end of URL's when we developed the site over 8 years ago.

Now we just realized in Google Webmaster Tools that we have duplicate content, meta descriptions and titles of a lot of URL's such as for example:

Duplicates:
/rya-sailing-courses/one-day-courses/basic-sea-survival.html
/rya-sailing-courses/one-day-courses/basic-sea-survival

Is there anything we can do about using Joomla 3.7 - I thought Joomla is using canonical URL's but I cannot find them in the source code... or is there just third party plugins solving this problem?

Consider using third party SEO extension for canonical urls.

you can , from the control panel, remove the suffix without the need for any extensions.
however check the menu links just in case.

if your site was made 8 years ago, is it kept updated.

Thanks
Yes our site is updated or was redesigned a couple of times since J1.5...

I know where I can deactivate suffixes but then hundreds of pages would need a 301 redirect to the new pages without the suffixes...

We selected suffixes and want to keep them the question is why are search engines find those URLs without suffixes or how can that be avoided

Try redirecting URLs with extensions to URLs withouth extensions using conditions in htaccess file. E.g.

Code: Select all

www.example.com/my-cool-page.html
www.example.com/my-cool-page

Code: Select all

RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} \.html
RewriteRule ^(.*)\.html$ /$1 [R=301,L]
