Are the Joomla error.php (404) page are automatically noindex - nofollow ?

Post by Chacapamac » Sun May 31, 2020 10:04 pm

I was wondering if the error page generated by the Joomla error.php is automatically noindex, nofollow for search engines robots?

I see nothing in the file or in the robots.txt ?

Try it yourself: enter the URL <yourwebsite>/nonexistent, see the 404 page and view the page source: look for <meta ... > tags indicating follow/nofollow, index/noindex directives. If you find them then your website is generating them. If you don't find these meta tags then your website is not generating them.

Sometimes we have to stop and thinks or we have to listen, Thank You!

Just try on Joomla 4 beta and another site I’m working on and no nofollow and no noindex in the 404 page

Joomla 4 error page seem to come from templates > system > error.php

The other site use a module

In both case I’m not sure how to add the meta nofollow/noindex

I know If I create a Joomla page with a menu this is the more elegant way and I can add the meta easyly. I’m not sure how to do for error.php and by a module?

Directly in the php ?, robots.text...?

Yes my other test site is a joomla 3 site
It use a module to display a custom 404 and if you don’t use the module way it’s taking in charge by the error.php (in both Joomla 3 & 4)

In both these instances, I’m not sure how to use the noindex/nofollow?

If using the joomla error page then you get a 404 in the response header. Google does not index pages that give a 404 response header so there is nothing for you to do.
