wrong syntax of my canonical URL with Custom Canonical Plug-in

Post by raziel1973 » Sun Jan 31, 2021 12:32 am

Hi and thank you for your help.
I using Custom Canonical plug-in.
The syntax that this plug-in use is:
<link href="my_website.com" rel="canonical" />
and not
<link rel="canonical" href="my_website.com" />

witch one is correct?
To fix sef-url I change an URL of my website and also did a redirect 301 from old URL to new one.

It's one week and Google doesn't change the canonical URL. The says that my page is a duplicate.
The problem is the wrong sintax of tag?
thank you.
Tony

I am using the Custom Canonical plug-in on my site.

The syntax:
<link href="my_website.com" rel="canonical" />

works fine, but in my experience it takes more than a week for google to notice things like this. It probably took 3-4 weeks (maybe longer) after I installed the plugin for most of my "duplicate without user selected canonical" errors to go away.

I use this Custom Canonical plugin as well for creating the canonical links. It works well, except for the tags: If I switch on the canonical creation for tags and then I link any of the tags, will drop a 404 error.
But not for all tags.

For the usual tags ".../component/tags/tag/..." works well.
But if I create a new Compact list of tagged items Menu Item, then it drops a 404 - page not found error.

The site I am trying to fix the canonical: https://www.szerver.hu/
An example Compact list of tagged items Menu Item: https://www.szerver.hu/munkaallomasok/
Has anybody met this issue before?

Hi

1 - As Alex W said, the syntax is fine, the order of attributes does not matter in HTML

2 - A canonical is just a hint. That you add a canonical will not necessarily make Google change their decision about which page is canonical. It does take a bit of time, but keep in mind they may just ignore your canonical if they have other signal that tell them the opposite.

Typically, if you have internal or external links to the "old" page, then it might still be considered the canonical page, even if you added a canonical link tag.

Adding a 301 redirect is a much stronger signal and it should have the desired effect, after a while.

Custom Canonical works well in Joomla 3, but not compatible with Joomla 4. I wait for update.
