menu links showing https on hover/click w/SEF enabled

Post by lf479 » Fri Apr 12, 2013 11:04 am

Have been digging around and can find examples of parts of my problem but not the whole picture.

First, was running Joomla 1.5 for years. Am now building a new site which is CentOS, nginx, Joomla 3. Things were going fairly smooth on building from scratch until I enabled SEF. I noticed the typical index.php in the url, enabled rewrite and have the standard rewrite lines in my nginx conf. URL then looked more like I expected.

Problem is now that once I click on a menu item off the home page, it changes me to https. So I changed force https to admin only and then off when admin only showed same symptoms.. always forcing me to https in menu selections off home page.

I have seen suggestions to install extra modules to allow you to individually select ssl on a per page basis, but this to me is just a hack for what I want to do.

I am hoping the problem is more of something not quite right on install since the whole thing is fresh out of the box and is not a 'bug/feature' of Joomla 3.

I really have no need for SSL on the site unless I am going in as admin. The site itself does not require login, it is fully public.

Any suggestions?

If you hover over a menu item and not click it, but just look at the URL in your browser, is it https:// ?

Yes, if you hover over any menu items that point to an article on the site you can see that it is set for https (before clicking)

The one menu item that is actually a link to an offsite url is http.

Then Joomla is generating the redirect, not your .htaccess

Can you confirm what is set in Global Configuration -> Server Tab -> Force SSL

Force SSL Is set to "None".

Problem goes away when I set "Search Engine Friendly URLs" to No, save, and refresh webpage on front side. You get the wordy url but its http. Thats what has me so confused.

Does it make a difference if you set set Force SSL to Admin Only?

I am not that far into this site build. Am half tempted to trash the install and start from scratch. Put up 1 article and 1 menu item and see if that works.

(FYI, title change to better describe problem)
