Pagespeed: How I went from a 78-97 removing unused css

Post by lip420 » Wed Apr 26, 2017 6:36 pm

I originally started with a protostar template, made it my own (renamed it). I used to get errors like: Eliminate render-blocking JavaScript and CSS in above-the-fold content I had a 78 for my mobile pagespeed.

Then I started removing unused css from my template.css. I started with 149KB. I removed a ton of unused css. Got it down to around 20KB. That alone brought my score up to 85 or so.

I used sites like:
https://www.w3schools.com/bootstrap/boo ... lasses.asp
Chrome (audit) and firefox dust me selectors.
http://www.diffchecker.com

It was a bit tedious and took some time. There was some back and forth trying to figure out what stuff meant.

Then I inlined the style sheet that I reduced to 9KB all the way from 149KB.

And my grade went up another 10 or so points.

No, it's only been a week or so. I think to see any results would probably take a few months or more.

Since the page source changed I am actually expecting traffic to fall before it increases. In the past whenever I changed the template in my site my traffic fell. I didn't actually change the template this time but modified it some and added the css to the header.

85 mobile score is great, unnecessary css and js should be always removed from template as they really slows down website.
I wonder if it will improve your rank as speed is ranking factor

That site did better after removing unused CSS, but it was still slower in mobile like 65-70% on pagespeed so I set out to attempt to make it faster still, but had some limitations.

Then I decided to make my own template that's high speed and really simple. It's a minimalistic Joomla template with just one column. Now I get pagespeed scores of mostly 90-100% in both mobile and desktop.
