SEO is totally broken, Does joomla just break url's for fun

Post by neiljames54 » Wed May 24, 2017 6:37 pm

My google ranking for Cardrona used to appear on page 1 about number 5, when I do a search now this rubbish appears,
sreenCardrona.jpg
The urls bear no resemblance to any of my site urls, note the numbers present within the urls, when you then click on these urls all that appears is a mess.

Has anyone any idea of the cause, this website has been online for 5-6 years with no issues whatsoever and now it is a mess????

1) I searched for "Cardrona Golf" and the SERPs from Google were nothing like what you displayed in your post, sorry.

2) When you say that your website "has been online for 5-6 years with no issues whatsoever", do you mean that you've kept your site up-to-date with the current version of Joomla and Joomla extensions?

3) I searched the internet for "mygolfdays" and I located this information—that may or may not be relevant—from a few years ago: viewtopic.php?t=841098

It's possible that your website has been "defaced" again. I don't know the cause of your current problem; I also don't know if the problem you reported a few years ago was fixed, either.

Sucuri does not report hacked ... however it does show 2 iframes

Code: Select all

List of iframes included
http://20552177p.rfihub.com/ca.html?rb=8629&ca=20552177&ra=102
http://dp2.specificclick.net?nwk=3&y=2&t=h&tp=3&clid=499&pixid=330104011&u=
A search of those shows they are linked to adware

Sozzled.
I added mygolfdays to the cardrona search term, cardrona used to come top of the first google page and now its nowhere.
Site is always up to date and all the components, modules, plugins.
I fixed the previous problem which was not causing the weird search urls.

Webdongle.
I have hunted for these iframes without success, there are iframes but they are the google adsense iframes.

Would theses iframes cause the url problem

Well, if you added something (a keyword or some advertising feature) and the SERPs are "rubbish", this does not seem to be a sound basis for implying—in the subject of this topic—that Joomla is "breaking" your URLs (for "fun" or for any other reason). I don't know what's causing the problem, however.

As I mentioned previously, I used Google to search for "Cardrona Golf" and I did not see any results like what you illustrated. What search term(s) did you use to generate the list of URLs like you showed in the image in post #1?

Webdongle,
I have checked the iframes and see that the fastsocial share plugin uses iframes, I have deleted this extension and would be eternally grateful if you could do your check on Sucuri again. I did the Sucuri check but this is not showing any iframes.

Sozzled,

I have read and searched a lot about these url's and find this is not an uncommon problem and like you said there seems to be no answer, therefore there is an ongoing problem and no one is able to solve. The image below is an example of some of the pages I have had to redirect using the redirect component (which is missing from the admin menu since 3.7, another joomla fault), these url's are all from visitors using the google search and also show up on my statcounter analysis

I have just checked visitors on statcounter and this visitor seems to have come to the home page, see image below
screenStatcounter.jpg
In actual fact the url visited was, http://www.mygolfdays.com/18-ayrshire-g ... s?start=16 and took the visitor to a page full of mess, so my question to Joomla is why has this just started happenning. If I have done something wrong I will hold my hand up and admit a screw up

??? ??? ??? I don't understand your last post: "... http://www.mygolfdays.com/18-ayrshire-g ... s?start=16 and took the visitor to a page full of mess" ???

I don't know how the page is supposed to look ... and so I cannot comment. Screenshots needed of the "messy" page vs. "unmessy" page, I think.

Again I am making a request to help solve the rubbish url's

Post by neiljames54 » Wed May 16, 2018 7:01 pm

In my previous post about this I suggested Joomla and its URL's are rubbish.

Why oh why do we have to continually delete URL's from Google and Bing that point to the wrong/non-existent articles eg;

https://mygolfdays.com/component/mymapl ... golf-links - THIS DOES NOT EXIST
https://mygolfdays.com/golf-courses-in- ... lf-courses - THIS TAKES YOU TO THE ARGYLL CATEGORY that shows a jumbled list of courses in that category ????why
https://mygolfdays.com/golf-courses-in- ... club?id=59 - THIS TAKES YOU TO DUFF HOUSE ROYAL in Aberdeenshire

This is only a miniscule selection and are all coming from Google and Bing search results, I have had a root around this SEO category and see this is a problem. Come on you good folk at Joomla we need answers

If you are referring to another topic on this forum where you discussed a related matter, can you please provide us with the URL of that topic so that we put this matter into context? The link you asked for viewtopic.php?f=712&t=951028

You will note this was posted in the same forum, therefore your suggestion i have cross posted is wrong.

So my question still remains what on earth is going on with these joomla url's, I have trawled the seo forum and find there are many complaints about this exact problem but there seems to be no definitive answers.

One suggestion is the canonical url's being a problem, if this is the case what about a fix.

Take this url for example, https://mygolfdays.com/golf-courses-in- ... gory&id=19 when you click on it it shows all the courses inside the East Lothian Category. The dumfriesshire part of the url does not exist anywhere on the site as a Menu/article or category, it might have existed in an earlier incarnation of the site many years ago, this part of the url- ?view=category&id=19 -refers to an existing category East Lothian Courses which is what you see when you click on the above link.

This url - https://mygolfdays.com/golf-courses-in- ... club?id=59 ,the url as far as the /lumphanan-golf-club - looks good however this bit - ?id=59 - takes you to the category id 9 Aberdeenshire-golf-courses (not even a menu item) then on to the menu item Duff House Royal Golf Club.

Per, I have been to google webmaster tools and this url throws a 404, https://mygolfdays.com/golf-courses-in- ... -golf-club and as you see the url contains dumfriesshire and google correctly throws the 404 but why is it showing up this mess in my first example at the head of this post.

The Google webmaster tools for the Privacy Policy menu item shows internal links for nearly all of the site menu items, the privacy policy has no internal links.

I am perfectly happy to pm you with details to have a root around the site to check if this is all my doing.

Sozzled, whilst I appreciate you are all about points scoring this will not fix the url problem I have with my site and I would appreciate help rather than this "attitude", you are clearly being defensive about my use of the word MANY. How about 2 for a start, this one looks suspiciously like an example viewtopic.php?f=712&t=961762, this one is similar but they refer to read mores viewtopic.php?f=712&t=961762

statcounter1.jpg
This section from the statcounter analytics showing the Mediapartners-Google crawler is what is picking up the dodgy urls. Am I doing something wrong by allowing these crawlers access. The joomla redirects component goes mad also, in one day I have 160 x 404 hits

@neiljames54: you wrote that there have been "many complaints"—with no "definitive answers". I don't understand what you mean.

I'm not disputing you claims but I'm at a lost to know how Joomla might be "breaking" URLs—just for "fun" or for any other reason.

I don't dispute that somehow, people seem to be attempting to access non-existent URLs. Perhaps they're just fishing around? Perhaps there are outdated SERPS hanging around on Google? Perhaps this is only a case of referrer spam.

The point that I'm trying to understand—the matter that remains unclear to all of us—is the matter of these "many complaints" (presumably from other members of the community) that have not been addressed. Can you please provide us with some examples of these "many complaints" that you have found so that we can look at your matter in some appropriate context.

At the moment, I'm just guessing. My guess (which could be quite wrong) is that you have a problem with either (a) referrer/ghost spam or (b) with Google retaining stale/outdated links to your site—URLs that have no possibility of targeting a legitimate result.

Ha! I get that number (and then some) on some of my websites. This is called "referrer spam". I wrote an article about it and there's a forum topic on this matter: viewtopic.php?f=714&t=958501

The reason I ask if urls are broken is because categories are being included inside the url, so my question is why are the search engines picking up categories when they are not listed as a menu items anywhere, I adhere to the CAM method as described by Jen Kramer from Lynda.com. All my articles belong to a menu item and should not pick up category groups.

This topic viewtopic.php?f=712&t=959526 is a case in example, why are non-existent resources being listed.

This topic is an oldie but nevertheless relevant viewtopic.php?f=712&t=896703.

I am sorry if I am getting a bit grumpy but the first instance of this problem absolutely decimated my visitor numbers and I now see the same pattern going on now.

Could i be causing the problem with my page/menu setup, I do not display any menus although all the articles are linked to their own menu item. If you check this page https://mygolfdays.com/golf-courses-in-scotland you will see I have clickable links to the corresponding article, if you then follow one of the links on that page https://mygolfdays.com/golf-courses-in- ... shire-golf you will see another page of links to the to the various articles. This is set up according to the heirarchical structure of the menu set up.

Thanks for your reply. I have an appointment that I need to get to soon and I don't have enough time at the moment to give you a detailed response in relation to these matters (or, indeed, to the whole discussion as it has pertains all of your concerns) but I want to make a couple of short points:

1) There's a lot of hype but, even more disturbingly, there are many myths about SEO.

2) I'm no SEO expert. I'm not a complete novice but I know a few things that keep me out of trouble. We would probably all benefit by buying (and reading) the extensive published literature on the subject. I'm "self-taught": I watched the videos, looked at the various tips and techniques recommended by Google, but I probably should buy a book (and immerse myself in it) before I make pronouncements about what anyone else should do.

3) We can probably achieve a more fruitful realisation about your issues if we (a) lose some of the "grumpiness" and (b) not generalise about the source of these problems and pin the blame on "Joomla". Admittedly, J! itself has some features that will improve a website's SEO if they're used properly. Misuse (or inattention to detail) with these features may have unwanted consequences for SERPs. I don't dispute that you have problems but I can't accept that SEO is totally broken or that "Joomla" has broken your URLs "just for fun", either.

4) We may obtain some better understanding and establish a rapprochement if we sat down and talked about this, one on one, via video-conferencing. I'm happy to sit with you for an hour on Skype if you think that might help. Send me a PM if you are interested in exploring that opportunity.

I'll have to leave the rest of my comments about the examples you gave in your last post until later.
