Google is smart enough to know the difference between http:// http://www. and https://

Firefox nags you hard when visiting ANY http:// site that needs a login. And it's only gonna get worse, not better...

I just did this move about 2 weeks ago. Many reasons to do it. I needed to do it because various of my XML feeds will only serve to SSL websites. Also there are warnings on Firefox and IE that bothered me. Most of my competitors have already moved. My experience was the following:

Updated my sitemaps, robots.txt, configuration.php, my CDN (in the JCH Optimize plugin) and htaccess redirects all to https. Checked some extentions to use https, obviously changed joomla to use https. It was not completly smooth transfer because something in my htaccess file wasnt working but that was fixed with help from my hosting company.

Other small things you may need to check are links to API's, google analytics, google adsense.

I created a NEW property in Google Webmaster search console, got this property verified.

Entered the new sitemap urls and submitted them.

I actually deleted my old old Google Webmaster search property for the http site, which you may choose not to do (it has not affected my results).

However, all is fine now, google reindexed everything relating to the new https property within about 15 days, all my old search results are still present in Google and traffic is roughly the same and everything is https. In fact I have more pages indexed then before because I switched to JSitemaps.

Advice is to be careful with mixed content on webpages, really check and check again to make sure all types of pages are using https, sometimes you have to change links to reflect urls that start with just // (without http or https). This was the case with some of my affiliate links.

Hope this helps someone.
