SEO for different locations

Post by JohnSmithers » Wed Apr 18, 2018 3:52 pm

How would you set up your Joomla pages and SEO to target users in specific - local - locations; In other words if they search for a local service in their home town?

Would you have separate subdomains, with the town in its own joomla install?

I would have separate pages for towns and optimise those pages for the targeted town.

So the urls would be:

www.mywebsite.com/index.php/anytown?

as opposed to

www.mywebsite.com/anytown?

Got this now I hope. Falls into place. Thanks for your response. You've lightened someone's load tonight :-)

I agree with gws on this, you should create pages on the same site that targets each location. you don't want subdomains as these are essentially separate websites. it may be an option if you have lots of articles about each area but I will stick to one site for now...

The second option looks good John Smithers, I would ditch the index.php and just have yoursite.com/town1 etc..
good luck

You need to create separate, optimized pages for each business location.

These should not be identical. Include:

That location’s name, address, and phone number (NAP)

Location-specific content (staff information, testimonials, news, etc.)

you can make individual text insertion in same page based on selected sity.
like {town=1}Town 1 text{/town}.

I am in another place and I sell to another place, the first thing I do is not to care about my current position but always focus on keywords where I want to stay in place. Otherwise you will remain stable on the top

I would use the subdirectory method and then target the regional traffic to their respective pages using a CDN service.

This method is good too if you don't want to go into the complexity of subdomains or subdirectory Joomla installation.

Dude just go on Moz or Google subdomains vs subfolders. Don't make sub-domains. You will kill your organic traffic.

I repeat - DO NOT use sub-domains.

seprate domain with loaction name is also good otherwise you can use different different inner urls for each loaction within same domain and target each specific Url with keywords.

For SEO location, you should have separate subdomains!
For SEO local, you can create a post in each local city, town such as you want with one condition you must a professional service for your SEO post! You need more knowledge and set up, submit to Google map!

Also agreed! Especially if you are a small site, you will ruin pretty much any chance you might have of gaining a good organic search presence. Keep it all on one domain, and create custom pages. This will benefit you in a lot of ways - better targeted Google Ads campaigns, more relevant location-based organic search queries etc. E.g. www.redacted/services/brooklyn-plumbers/ then have www.redacted/services/chicago-plumbers/. The key is then to make sure you don't have duplicate content. Create unique content on each of these pages that talk specifically about the location. So the Brooklyn plumbers page should be all about how your company is experienced in fixing all plumbing-related issues in the Brooklyn area etc. Then the Chicago page needs completely different content, but make sure you reference Chicago specifically in here.

I Would devide the pages into towns, but you have to consider Proximity. Google are always prioritizing Companies located in the cities.

If you have e office or a physical location in the cities i would claim a Google My business for better chance of ranking.

Best Regards

Okay, when I look at others for the same location I find that the majority have a URL www.theirdomain.com/theirlocation/index.php

But, just to confirm the way you are recommending is to have my links as:
www.mydomain.com/index.php/mylocation

Thanks in advance. Best thread I've enjoyed on here :-)

As a side note, I would also look at removing the index.php from your URL - it's quite outdated. Removing it will allow you to then have nice clean URLs. The best URL format would be www.yourdomain.com/yourlocation/services :)

If its different languages regions you need a multilanguage site and use hreflang tag.
If it mono-language try to find keywords with toponyms and create a pages for these keywords.
