Duplicate page/URL issue

Post by networkingstudy » Sat May 05, 2018 4:38 pm

Hi,

in global configuration i have -

Search Engine Friendly URLs - Yes
Use URL Rewriting - Yes
Add Suffix to URL - Yes.

Now, you can access same URL with two type that is a issue.

Example -
https://www.example.com/interview-qa/37 ... -directory
https://www.example.com/interview-qa/37 ... ctory.html

I want that, only one url can work.

You have to disable EVERY Cache plugin. Joomla conservative cache. Server Cache. CloudFlare cache (if any).

And then use a new icognito browser, or vpnif posted, check from different PC. Can you share your URL please?

Hi

This is how the Joomla router works. It's actually worse than that, it will return the same page based on the id so:

https://www.joomla.org/announcements/re ... lease.html
https://www.joomla.org/announcements/re ... -8-release
https://www.joomla.org/announcements/re ... omla-3-8-8
https://www.joomla.org/announcements/re ... 730-joomla
https://www.joomla.org/announcements/release-news/5730

will all return the same content - without a canonical tag.

Note that this become an issue only if there are actual links to those different versions. So for instance, if you have links anywhere on your site or on other people sites to both:

https://www.example.com/interview-qa/37 ... -directory

and

https://www.example.com/interview-qa/37 ... ctory.html

Then you have a small issue. If you make sure that all links are with an .html suffix then search engines won't find and index them, and there will be no issue.

Faced the same issue a few days back. Here's what I did: resaved permalinks settings, cleared cache, tried in incognito and it worked.

Although I suggest you to make use of Canonical tags to avoid any duplicate content penalty.

You could use redirect option or insert a nicely canonical tag in your site. I have just use a recently developed extension call "Custom canonical": https://extensions.joomla.org/extension ... canonical/. I think it easy to use.

As @shumisha correctly wrote, this is a bug of the Joomla router. However, you have the option to switch to the new router. Just navigate to "Content" -> "Articles" -> "Options" and set the "URL Routing" option to "modern". Make sure to leave the option "Remove IDs from URLs" to "No" so your URLs do not change.

You might also want to use a SEO plugin from the extensions directory.
