404 errors and how to remove urls permanently

Hi Guys

On my quest for better SEO on my website i have changed navigation a little. Which means my Joomla RE-Direct Component is throwing up 404 errors...plus the other story of 404 from site.ru but we wont open that message up :p

Now yes i can add a redirect via Joomla Redirects or i could use Admin Tools to do the same thing in from old url to the new one, but surely that does not get rid of the old url from Google or other search engines. Plus would a search engine think there are now 2 urls with the same data on!!!

I had raised this question on a SEO forum, this is what they advised:

This method is quick, fast and effective.
First create a page, goneforever-410.html, Make it look basically like your current 404 page, except make it return a 410 status code.
Add the following lines to your lightspeed .thaccess file.
ErrorDocument 410 /goneforever-410.html
Now find the line of code in your htaccess file that looks like this
RewriteEngine On
Then immediately add one line for each page / url that you want gone forever, make them look like what follows.

Now is there an easier way in Joomla, or is one of the redirection methods going to flag search engines to remove old url.

regards Pete
