404 redirect problem Topic is solved

Hi I am having a problem with my 404 redirects.

The redirects work OK when it is redirecting to a page within the root structure

Example: mysite.com/oldpage - This redirect works as it should and goes to the 404 as it should.

BUT

If there is a folder within that url like this

Example: mysite.com/folder/oldpage

I get this browser warning saying:
Too many redirects occurred trying to open “mysite.com/folder/oldpage/404”.

It does not direct through to the 404 page.

With old pages indexed on Google that have been removed from my site, again if you click on this old page that's indexed with this problem the user gets an error page again saying to many redirects.

Does anyone know why this might be happening? If so what might the solution be to a problem like this?

Solved it was an error with error.php
