Turning SEF on for site causes 404 errors

Joomla 3.10.6
With SEF on clicking ANY article title or READ MORE give a 404 article not found everything works fine with SEF turned off.
.htaccess is the default that comes with Joomla.
the site worked fine until the 3.10.6 update.
I have searched everywhere and cannot find the problem. Any help would be appreciated!

gzip is not turned on and there is no compression is the template. Site is still undergoing development.

Why not use the latest - 3.10.11?
