Duplicate template not writable

We had some problems with the last Joomla upgrade so I am trying to streamline the files before I try the latest.

After the last one we ended up with 2 copies of out custom template. One gives an error "the folder is not writable". If I change the name of that file to tell them apart, however, both of them change.

Also, you will see that I deleted Beez and Protostar templates in the Extension Manager, but they still show up in the Templates: Templates (Site) (and still did after I tried just taking the files off through FTP) but not in the Templates Styles. Isis shows up in the Extension Manager but not on the Template Manager.

Any help you can give me to have all this agree is appreciated. (I will put two of the attachments in the comments because it seems to be limiting me to 3.)

The folder is not writeable but Joomla has file Owner Permissions which means it can change the file to 755 when it saves then change it back. (Or it deletes the file and replaces with a new one ... I have had several people tell me different versions of how Joomla does it). If the file will not save then you have a file Ownership issue on your server

Also note that the structure of some 3rd party extensions prevents them from being copied using the Template manager

Everything I read, including at least one post in the Joomla forum, said to remove templates in the Extension Manager, otherwise it causes other problems. So that is why I did it that way!

Also I saw no way of doing it through the template manager, except in Styles, which I did, but it didn't delete them, they're still there.

Templates, like other extensions (Components, Modules and Plugins) are removed via Extensions >>> Manage >>> Manage ... select and then click the delete button. https://docs.joomla.org/Help36:Extensio ... ger_Manage

That's exactly what I did (which is what you said was "incorrect"). Yet they are still showing up in the Template Manager, and are still on my server, as I said in my original post.

Session Path Writable: No ... should be Yes. Speak to your Host about it.

You need to update Joomla. Also check that your 3rd party extensions are up to date (not all 3rd party extensions notify of updates).

Your OP said that you had problems updating in the past and that was why you were trying to sort out problems before updating this time. Are you now saying that you are having problems updating this time ?

Get your Host to fix Session Path Writable: No

Also you can make a copy of the site on localhost and try the update there.

I did have a problem this time also, although I didn't get error messages this time. It might have been an interruption in the upgrade but it was taking an awfully long time which didn't seem right either. Then I couldn't get into Joomla at all so we went to our backup.

When you restored your backup did you delete all the files or just overwrite them ? If the later then there may be a mismatch of files on the server. There is also the possibility of being hacked.

A method to update you can use is

1. Delete the folders/files
2. Install Joomla (of the same version as your backup) to a new database
3. Edit the configuration.php to connect to your original database and update
   That uses fresh/uncorrupted Joomla files to update your database
4. Delete the folders/files again
5. Install the latest Joomla to another new database
6. Download and install your 3rd party extensions.
   That gives you the the latest fresh/uncorrupted 3rd party extensions (without overwriting their database tables)
   All you need to do then is edit the configuration.php to connect to your original (updated) database

A bit cumbersome yes but it works and has the added advantage of removing hack files if you have been hacked
Try it on localhost first if you wish.

The web host fixed the directory issue, then I was able to update with no problem.
