Protostar ipad landscape menu issue

Post by markjgabb » Fri Jan 11, 2019 9:01 am

hey all
back again

when viewing my site
vicenduranceriders.com.au
from an ipad, using the safari browser in landscape mode
the top menu doesn't function at all,

when i tap on the grey menu headings the sub-menus fail to show up.

i cant replicate this on any other device
would anyone have any advice on where i should start looking for the issue?

So far o e gone through and disabled my user.css but no change. I have to admit I've never tested it in Safari on an iPad before. So I'm unsure if it was like this out of the box

Has anyone else had a similar issue?

Ok. After continued testing. Either iPhone or iPad. Version doesn't seem to matter. Also doesn't matter if it's chrome on an iPhone or not. Submenu tree won't work... Is anyone aware of N outstanding ding iPhone issue?

1) Has nothing to do with user.css (so don't change "disable" anything)

2) The problem is that iPhone/iPad devices don't use "a:hover" (because you have to touch the screen with your finger) and therefore we'll need to add a:focus to the menu items (because not everyone can use a mouse, can they?).

3) I think I can suggest the changes that need to be made (i.e. new rules be added to user.css). Basically it's a case of finding the rules used for a:hover (as far as menu items are concerned) and adding a:focus.

4) Please confirm that you did not make (and have never made) any changes to the file ../templates/protostar/css/template.css ... because I think someone has made changes (to transform the menu item text into uppercase) that are not standard for Protostar. If you have made changes to template.css then you will lose those changes with some future update of Joomla. That's why all custom changes should be added to the user.css file.

I've defiantly never made changed, and i wouldn't mind if i lost the uppercase menus from the template to be honest.

would help make all the menus similar sizing.....

so if i run a find using notepadd ++ or similar and find all rules for a:hover, and copy them to user.css changing the hover to focus? or am i literatly adding to the rule?

I'm trying to figure out how to make menu items (those that are "parents" of sub-menus) transform the text into uppercase. There is something in the standard Protostar template that does this but I can't work out how to make it happen [yet]. It's probably a setting in the menu module.

Yes, you've kind of gotten the idea about what to do with a:hover ... but's a "little fiddly".

yes ive just scanned the template file, there is alot of instances of a:hover, about 2/3 of them have focus as well, which has given me an idea of what i need to do for some of them

it just seem odd that this isparticular to iphones and not androids at all, i would of thought this would be a particular browser issue

goes to show how much i still have to learn

Maybe you can help me? I still haven't figured out how you've made your menu items uppercase. Could you provide me with screenshots of your main menu module settings, please?

ahhh no worries...

Ive Started hunting through my template.css
Ive found a few instances of a:hover that dont have a:focus as well

but im not sure in some cases what i need to make it work...as in what level of the CSS i need to grab

the main one is in the huge chunk of code below

Code: Select all

@media (max-width: 768px) {
	body {
		-webkit-overflow-scrolling: touch;
		padding-top: 0;
	}
	.header {
		background: transparent;
	}
	.header .brand {
		float: none;
		display: block;
		text-align: center;
	}
	.header .nav.pull-right,
	.header-search {
		float: none;
		display: block;
	}
	.header-search form {
		margin: 0;
	}
	.header-search .search-query {
		width: 90%;
	}
	.header .nav-pills > li > a {
		border: 1px solid #ddd;
		border-bottom: 0;
		margin: 0;
		-webkit-border-radius: 0;
		-moz-border-radius: 0;
		border-radius: 0;
		margin-right: 0;
	}
	.header .nav-pills > li:first-child > a {
		-webkit-border-radius: 4px 4px 0 0;
		-moz-border-radius: 4px 4px 0 0;
		border-radius: 4px 4px 0 0;
	}
	.header .nav-pills > li:last-child > a {
		-webkit-border-radius: 0 0 4px 4px;
		-moz-border-radius: 0 0 4px 4px;
		border-radius: 0 0 4px 4px;
		border-bottom: 1px solid #ddd;
	}
	.modal.fade {
		top: -100%;
	}
	.nav-tabs {
		border-bottom: 0;
	}
	.nav-tabs > li {
		float: none;
	}
	.nav-tabs > li > a {
		border: 1px solid #ddd;
		-webkit-border-radius: 0;
		-moz-border-radius: 0;
		border-radius: 0;
		margin-right: 0;
	}
	.nav-tabs > li:first-child > a {
		-webkit-border-radius: 4px 4px 0 0;
		-moz-border-radius: 4px 4px 0 0;
		border-radius: 4px 4px 0 0;
	}
	.nav-tabs > li:last-child > a,
	.nav-tabs > .active:last-child > a {
		-webkit-border-radius: 0 0 4px 4px;
		-moz-border-radius: 0 0 4px 4px;
		border-radius: 0 0 4px 4px;
		border-bottom: 1px solid #ddd;
	}
	.nav-tabs > li > a:hover {
		border-color: #ddd;
		z-index: 2;
	}
	.nav-tabs.nav-dark > li > a {
		border: 1px solid #333;
	}
	.nav-tabs > li:last-child > a,
	.nav-tabs > .active:last-child > a {
		border-bottom: 1px solid #333;
	}
	.nav-tabs.nav-dark > li > a:hover {
		border-color: #333;
	}
	.nav-pills > li {
		float: none;
	}
	.nav-pills > li > a {
		margin-right: 0;
	}
	.nav-pills > li > a {
		margin-bottom: 3px;
	}
	.nav-pills  > li:last-child > a {
		margin-bottom: 1px;
	}
	.form-search > .pull-left,
	.form-search > .pull-right {
		float: none;
		display: block;
		margin-bottom: 9px;
	}
}
Do i need to move this entire chunk of code over the user.css to make the change or can i shrink it to only grab the parts i want?

Ummmm ... wait on while. I'm struggling to figure out how you transformed the menu items to uppercase. I've spent the past couple of hours searching to find out how this is done and I haven't discovered it yet.

While it's easy to override the text-tranform rule, why should we have to make that change if, out-of-the-box (i.e. on a stock-standard, no-frills J! website) this doesn't happen?

I'm also experimenting with Protostar on an iPxxxxx device to see how it normally works there.

OK: I've just discovered that if there's a parent menu item (with children) used with Protostar, on an iPhone/iPad, and you tap the menu item, then the submenu is displayed. So there should be no reason to change anything as long as we're only using the standard Joomla menu module; at least, that's my reckoning at this time.

See what I mean? The standard Protostar menu uses the "hamburger" glyph (the three horizontal bars) which is a fairly conventional means to show that there's a menu; in your case, your menu doesn't use the hamburger. So this, kind of, begs a few questions, doesn't it?

yes you are correct
so there is something definatly not standard in my setup

is there a way to get the original template.css file to overwrite mine?

Look, I don't know if there's anything non-standard; I'm only saying that, based on my own personal experience using Protostar, with an out-of-the-box J! 3.9.1 website (more or less) and the various display devices that I have at my disposal (a few PCs, laptops, iPhone, iPad), the menu works for me on all of those devices. That's really all that I'm saying. And, if it works as it's supposed to, there there's no need to change anything.

So, returning to the topic as you've written it: "Protostar iPad landscape menu issue". Is this really a basic design problem (that could affect hundreds of thousands of Joomla website owners around the world) or is there something unique in your case? That's really the sixty-four-thousand-dollar question.

I somehow doubt that we need to replace the Protostar template (and, yes, it can be replaced). I suspect that the issue lies in the menu module.

How do we learn more; pin down what's unique in your case? That might take a little while (or not). You could phone me if I gave you my phone number.

Two things we can do:

1) [ redacted ]

2) Use the Forum Post Assistant tool (see viewtopic.php?f=7&t=966324#p3550995 for instructions) and I or someone else may be able to see what's going on.

Referring to the [possible red-herring] topic you mention in your last post, that discussion was a couple of years old and a lot has changed in that time. In this business, a lot can happen within a few hours that will change the way we operate. Haven't had time to digest the information you refer to. It may be relevant, it may not be relevant; I don't know.

And ... woah!!!!!! Hold off making any changes!

Re: Protostar ipad landscape menu issue

Discussed by telephone late last night and discovered that another person—who created the website a cuple of years—had made changes to the template's index.php file; the changes were similar (on first inspection) to those suggested in viewtopic.php?t=927000#p3408097. Those changes were intended to change the behaviour of the site menu.

A little off-topic: the forum topic viewtopic.php?t=927000#p3408097 describes a method to change the hamburger glyph (which appears on mobile devices) into a text link with the word "MENU".

There may have been other changes made to the website's template.css file as well.

The proposed course of action in this case is, as a first step, to replace two files in the OP's website—index.php and template.css—with those contained in the Joomla installation package. The replacement files may change the appearance of the website but we're confident that, overall, these matters can be resolved fairly quickly by a judicious use of CSS by adding rules to the user.css file.

I'm writing these notes for the benefit of other members of the community who may be tempted to use information posted on the forum some [2½ years in this case] years ago. Even though information may be been posted (at the time) in good faith, people need to be careful about changing software written by others. See also my thoughts on this subject in viewtopic.php?f=713&t=968712&p=3554516

hey sozzled,

have reverted the two changes as we discussed.
The hamburger has returned but still no responsiveness from the ipad, i can click the hamburger to open the menus, but clicking on each heading gives no response.

i Also notice my headings are still in capitals....this is frustrating, as im completely unsure what else it could be, i mean i know joomla out the box should work on ipads and iphones, but something here just wont let it...

Re: Protostar ipad landscape menu issue

Post by sozzled » Sun Jan 13, 2019 9:04 am

Follow-up: the parent menu items are defined as Menu Type = Menu Header.

This explains why the text of parent menu items are uppercased.

The problem concerns how to effect a hover-like functionality on touch devices that do emulate hover (e.g. IOS). Until (or unless) Protostar employs a workaround for Android mobile devices, this matter will continue.

The general issue about how to use Joomla's menu system, where parent menu items are only "containers" for submenus, is complicated and not something that I'm able to assist; I do not have an Android mobile device. The problem is more generally described in a similar, but slightly different, new topic: viewtopic.php?f=713&t=968818

@markjgabb - your new topic was reported and it has now been removed because cross posting is against the forum rules, available from viewtopic.php?f=8&t=65.
