Atomic template for Joomla

Post by severdia » Mon Oct 19, 2020 4:16 pm

I've received a flurry of emails lately asking about the Atomic template that was included with Joomla 2.5 (originally a Joomla 1.5 template). It's a simple template based on Bootstrap that has a bunch of common options for customization (like which JavaScript library to include/exclude, FontAwesome, etc.). It has always been the fastest Joomla template available (mainly due to its simplicity) and I think it's a great starting point for creating your own custom template. More details and download info is here:

And see a live demo here:

Hopefully that helps if you're either looking for updates for the Atomic template or you just want a simple template to start with on your own.

I suppose the best 3.x equivalent is Protostar - also fast and simple and bootstrap-enabled.

Not really. Protostar is much slower and doesn't compare at all speed-wise. And the Atomic template works with with Joomla 3.x and 4 (beta) so no equivalent needed (and it has always been free).

Point conceded....GTMetrix side by side - Atomic "wins". https://gtmetrix.com/compare/RTgTyHNX/k608t8m7

However, in just my observation of loading both normally in my browser, there's no discernible difference in load speed.

Thanks for posting the comparison. I just made a small tweak to improve the score even more (which will be included in the next release). :)

Yes, mileage may vary depending in server setup and configuration (as with any Joomla installation/template). However, if even the perceived speed is negligible, Google scores SEO based on factors such as measured speed. which improves your ranking.

Now improved the scores a tiny bit more.

This is the highest score it can be without using a CDN and it's still way faster than any other template out there (most users probably won't use a CDN anyway). I'd love to see if there are any other fast templates out there I might have missed. I know that RocketTheme's Afterburner was one of the fastest years ago, but I haven't found any others.
