template recommendation

Post by duran868 » Sun Nov 15, 2020 9:43 pm

Hi! Can anyone recommend a modern template with clean code and fast loading time? I've been using WordPress, and I'm brand new to Joomla. I know there are many cool-looking, yet bad templates out there.
Thanks!

This is really a "how long is a piece of string" question.

I would suggest, to start with, try Protostar, included with Joomla.....

What exactly makes a template "bad"? In some cases, it could be a combination of template, extensions used and the content itself that slows the site down, as well as infrastructure (hosting), internet connection and so on. One can't blame a "badly coded template" as the *only* cause to slow sites.

Some template developers develop templates for Joomla and WordPress.

So if you have good experience with specific WordPress Themes from developers who also have Joomla templates, then maybe you could start with checking out those...

Peter, what template did you use for your website https://the-best-website.com? It looks good to me. I would like to do something like what I did this one in WP with... http://thethreerooms.com/
Thanks!

Peter, what template did you use for your website https://the-best-website.com? It looks good to me.
Thanks! That website is just one Joomla website using Joomla's core multilingual functionality with five languages. With a non-core plugin all five languages are displayed under their own top level domain.

For the template I used "Yootheme Pro". It's not a template like other templates that you just install and use.
It is a Template + Page Builder in one.

In the Yootheme Pro Page Builder I created different "templates" (not Joomla template but views in the Yootheme Page Builder).
Those "templates" display "dynamic content" on the pages that I constructed with the Page Builder:
  • One "template" is used for the "category blog" pages (page articles from one category). It displays the dynamic content: category image, title and description, and underneath an article intro image, article title and link to article.
  • Another "template" is used for the "single article" pages. It displays the dynamic content: article title, article intro image, full text image, article text. And page navigation to navigate to other articles in the same category.
Yootheme Pro is very powerful. However, if you are gonna use Yootheme Pro on an advanced website,
you might run into some limitations. Some of which you can solve with workarounds:
  • You can add one Google Analytics code in the template. However, I needed to add 5 different codes: one for each language/domain. I solved that by creating a template override (Yootheme Pro calls that "Child theme"). In that override I coded a switch that uses a different GA code for each language.
  • On another site I use Joomla's 'Restricting access to "read more"' with Joomla's option "Show Unauthorised Links". It will display the article's intro text but you have to login (or register) to read more.
    https://docs.joomla.org/Restricting_acc ... ad_more%22
Currently Yootheme does not support that functionality. So all articles have a "Read more" button. While Joomla's default Protostar template would display "Register to read more".
So it is a powerful Template/Page Builder and not a template that you just install and use...
