How do I center Nav-pills menu Protostar position 1

How do I center the horizontal menu selections?

The default nav-pills horizontal menu is left justified when using position 1. In the past, I would have enough menu items so that it filled the screen. However with smart phones, in order to not have the whole first display showing only menu items, I had to cut the parent menu items to the minimum and put the rest as secondary selections. This makes the left justified menu items look bad on a normal PC screen. How do I change it to center rather than left?

I found one bit of advice to modify template.css at line 6969 with "margin-left 80px"; jut below .navigation .nav-pills { margin-bottom: 0; however there was no change.

1) Is there a way to do this with settings rather than modify css?
2) If not, can someone point me to the right lines to modify and what to do.
