Please recommend free template

Post by Matt Rayner » Mon Sep 24, 2018 4:08 pm

Hi all!
Can anyone recommend a free template for our language school website.
We want a site 100% optimized for viewing on a phone.
I've attached a sketch below of the homepage layout I'm after.
Gratefully yours
Matt

It's not the Template that matters ... it's the way you use it. Use Protostar and use good extensions and put the data in your site. You can arrange things afterwards. The Template is not your site ... your data is.

If a template is responsive (modern template should be) you will generally get that kind of layout on a phone anyway. Some templates may have an "off canvas" module position in which you could place a second copy of your main menu - that won't be visible on bigger screens (laptops/desktops), but will be optomised for phones and will have that condensed/accordion style that you see on such sites.

I advise you to develop a simple template yourself, it is not a hard labor task, study a simple tutorial and you will find it easy.

Without content you will not be able to fully test a Template. If the content does not match the content that will be in your site ... then any view (of a Template) will not bear a resemblance to the final look of your site.

Trying to build (or test) a Template without content is like trying to fit a roof on a house that has not been built. It doesn't matter how responsive a Template is if the content isn't responsive then the site wont be responsive.

Don't forget to make backups https://extensions.joomla.org/extension/akeeba-backup/ to help make images responsive https://extensions.joomla.org/extension/jce/ and https://extensions.joomla.org/extension ... -mediabox/

Your content will define the template you need. Simple content, simple temp....oh you know where this is going - don't shoot the messenger.
Once you have decided what is going in it try one of the clean free frameworks like Gantry 4 or 5 and use as little or as much you need of it.
It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so. Twain

If you don't have real content then use dummy text like printers (as in publishers/typesetters) do - Lorem Ipsum. You can even get plugins that generate this sample text, such as https://extensions.joomla.org/extension/dummy-content/

The problem with using Lorem Ipsum is that it does not represent the true content. Thus will not show any problems (with responsive) that the real data will not show. If you build or test a Template with sample data you may find it is no good when you use it on a site you put real content in.

Creating/testing a Template without content is like putting a roof on a house that has not been built.
Creating/testing a Template with sample data is like building a roof for one house then trying to fit it on a totally different house.

Building the site with proper content before selecting/editing a Template ... is the optimum work flow.
